Gerhard Konow (born March 16, 1929 in Stettin ; † May 27, 1997 in Bonn ) was a German lawyer and political official .

Education and professional career

After his studies of law and political science at the Universities in Kiel and Marburg (1948-1957) and the subsequent legal training Konow entered the service of the country Hessen one. Until 1970 he worked in the Hessian State Chancellery , first as a consultant , from 1965 as head of department . In August 1970 he moved to the Federal Chancellery as head of department .

In 1981 Konow took up his only political office: after the Berlin Senate under the leadership of Dietrich Stobbe ( SPD ) had declared its resignation due to a failed Senate reshuffle , the previous Federal Minister of Justice Hans-Jochen Vogel (SPD) took over the formation of a new one State government . At his suggestion, Gerhard Konow was elected Senator for Federal Affairs on January 23, 1981 by the Berlin House of Representatives; at the same time he assumed the function of the representative of the state of Berlin at the federal level. Since the SPD resigned from government responsibility in the subsequent early election to the House of Representatives on May 10, 1981 , Konow's senatorial office ended on June 11, 1981 when his successor Norbert Blüm ( CDU ) took office. As a senator, Konow was a full member of the Federal Council from January 27 to June 11, 1981 .

In September 1981 Konow found renewed employment in the SPD-led federal government : until March 31, 1982 he was head of the transport policy policy department in the Federal Ministry of Transport ; on April 1, he was appointed State Secretary of that Ministry . Due to a cabinet reshuffle in which the head of the Federal Chancellery, Manfred Lahnstein, was appointed Federal Minister of Finance , Konow took over his previous office just 28 days later. This also made him the agent for the federal intelligence services .

After Chancellor Helmut Schmidt (SPD) was replaced on October 1, 1982 by a constructive vote of no confidence by Helmut Kohl (CDU), Konow lost his post as State Secretary three days later; his successor at the head of the Federal Chancellery was Waldemar Schreckenberger , a confidante of Kohl.

On 1 November 1982. Konow took up his new post as state secretary in the Ministry of Culture country North Rhine-Westphalia on; In 1983 he moved to the Ministry of Science and Research , where he held office until his retirement in 1994. This was followed by an activity as a consultant and representative of the North Rhine-Westphalian state government for the "Science City Bonn".

Gerhard Konow died a few years after his retirement at the age of 68 in Bonn.

Impartiality

Although Gerhard Konow was deployed exclusively in SPD-led governments during his career , he remained independent throughout his life . At the beginning of his tenure as head of the Federal Chancellery, he emphasized that he was "not a so-called, but a really non-party".
