Gilbert Baumet

Gilbert Baumet (born February 5, 1943 in Pont-Saint-Esprit ) is a former French politician. He was a member of the Senate from 1980 to 1992 and a member of the National Assembly from 1993 to 1997 .

Baumet was elected mayor of Pont-Saint-Esprit in 1971 . In 1980 he became a senator for the Gard department . In the Senate he was a member of the Commission for Social Affairs. He was re-elected in 1989 but resigned in 1992. From 1993 to 1997 he sat in the National Assembly. Baumet was a non-party politician and was a member of various parliamentary groups. In 1994 he was the target of two assassinations. He was uninjured in the first attack in June and gunshot wounds in the second in September. On September 4, 2009, Baumet had to resign from the office of mayor due to high public pressure, as he had been blamed for a deficit of 13 million euros.
