Gilbert (III.) Motier de La Fayette († February 23, probably 1463), Seigneur de La Fayette etc., was Chevalier, councilor and chamberlain of the Dauphin and later French King Charles VII , as well as Marshal of France at the age of centenarians War .

Gilbert Motier is the son of Guillaume Motier, Seigneur de La Fayette et de Goutenoutouze , and Catherine Brin du Peschin, Dame de Pont-Gibault et de Hautefeuille. He was raised in the household of Duke Louis II de Bourbon and served under Marshal Boucicaut in Italy; on his return to France after the loss of Genoa in 1409 he was elected by the duke (Louis II. de Bourbon died in 1410, his successor was Jean I de Bourbon ) to his seneschal in the Bourbonnais and then to the marshal in the wars against the English in Languedoc , where Bourbon was appointed lieutenant-general of the king. In the service of Jean de Bourbon, La Fayette took part in the conquest of Soubise in 1413 , in the tournament organized by the Duke in Paris in 1414 and in the conquest of Compiègne in 1415 , and in the same year received the office of governor of Carlat and from the king Rochefort.

After Gilbert Motier entered the service of the Dauphin, the latter appointed him Bailli of Rouen on June 13, 1417 and sent him to Normandy to defend Caen and Falaise against Henry V of England , but this failed. From March 1, 1418 he was lieutenant and captain-général in the Lyonnais and Mâconnais for four months to protect Lyon from the attacks of Johann Ohnefurcht , Duke of Burgundy . He became governor and captain of the Château de Beaulieu, which he took from the enemy in 1419, as well as several places on the Rhône and the castles of Saint-Sulpice in the Sénechaussée Toulouse and Millau in Rouergue . On January 24, 1420 he was referred to as "Chevalier, Conseiller et Chambellan du Dauphin de Viennois, regent le royaume". From May 27, 1420 to October 1, 1420 he was governor of the Dauphiné .

Gilbert Motier was Commander-in-Chief of the French contingent in the Battle of Baugé (March 22, 1421), in which Thomas of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Clarence, was killed and was appointed Marshal of France in the same year. In 1422 he struck a Burgundian force under the command of Seigneur de Rochebaron. When he was in Auvergne in 1423 , he was ordered to occupy all the places held by troops of the Sire de la Trémoille and which were devastating the province. He defeated the English at Bourges and was captured at the Battle of Verneuil (August 17, 1424). After his release, the king sent him to Touraine and Vendômois in 1425 .

In 1429 he fought at the siege of Orléans and in the battle of Patay (June 18), and is therefore one of Joan of Arc's companions in arms . He also took part in the coronation of Charles VII (July 17, 1429).

In the Battle of Gerberoy (May 9, 1435) he succeeded in capturing the English Commander-in-Chief John FitzAlan, 14th Earl of Arundel , who died a short time later, on June 12, 1435, from his wounds. Gilbert Motier was one of the negotiators and signatories (September 21, 1435) of the Treaty of Arras . On May 3, 1439 he was appointed Seneschal of Beaucaire and Nîmes . In June 1439 he received the rule of Veauche in Forez from the Duke of Bourbon . His last campaign took place in 1449 against the English.
