The Saint-Germain-des-Fossés station was opened in 1854 with the section from Varennes-sur-Allier- Saint-Germain-des-Fossés of the Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons-Lyon-Perrache railway. With the extension of the line to Roanne and the commissioning of the line to Nîmes in 1855 and to Darsac in 1862, the station developed into one of the most important railway hubs in the Massif Central . A circular shed was built north of the station . The trains on the Lyon – Clermont-Ferrand connection had to go crazy until a connecting curve south of the station was opened in 2006.
Today the station is a majority of trains of TER Auvergne Rhône-Alpes of the connection Moulins - Clermont-Ferrand operated.
