history

Toponyms

1301 Vece ; 1793-1801 Vesse ; 1801 Vaisse ; 1801-1903 Vesse .

On January 23, 1903, the then mayor of Vesse, Joseph Bégonin, decided to rename the municipality to Bellerive-sur-Allier . The origin of the place name Vesse is doubtful, but the word besides " field bean " also has the meaning of a quiet but smelly fart . Bellerive-sur-Allier, on the other hand, sounds chic and means “beautiful bank on the Allier”.

coat of arms

Blazon : Divided by green and red; above two golden fleurs-de-lis ; below a golden bishop's staff ; on the dividing line a silver river covered by a divided, single horse in gold.

  • The Église Saint-Laurian church was originally built in the Romanesque style. She is the St. Laurian († 544), deacon of Milan and allegedly ordained Bishop of Seville . The building was badly damaged in the 16th century and reconstructed by local builders in the 19th century. The equipment includes a brightly painted plaster statue of St. Shows Laurian in bishop's robe. The stained glass windows showing scenes from the Passion of Christ are also remarkable .
  • The Château du Bost was one of the places where Marshal Pétain lived during the Second World War . Later it served as a retirement home until it was bought by the municipality in 1995, which has been running the estate since 2001 as a model farm ( Ferme modèle ).
Pont de Bellerive as seen from Vichy
  • The Pont de Bellerive bridge connects Bellerive-sur-Allier directly with the town of Vichy, which lies on the right bank of the Allier. The structure, which is 279 meters long and 15 meters wide, was designed by Jean-François Radoult de Lafosse. Ferry service across the Allier began in 1669. The first bridge was built in 1833, but it was destroyed by a flash flood two years later . The second building from 1838 also fell victim to a flood in 1866. On May 20, 1870, today's bridge - at that time still under the name Pont de Vichy - opened to traffic; It was officially inaugurated under the name Pont de Bellerive in 1932.
