Varennes-sur-Allier is a French commune with 3561 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Allier in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Vichy and the canton of Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule . Varennes-sur-Allier is a member of the administrative headquarters of Entr'Allier Besbre et Loire .
geography
Varennes-sur-Allier is located on the Allier River , about twenty kilometers north of Vichy . Varennes-sur-Allier is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Loup in the north, Montoldre in the east, Rongères in the south-east, Créchy in the south, Paray-sous-Briailles in the west and Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule in the west and north-west.
Route nationale 7 and Route nationale 209 as well as the former Route nationale 146 run through the municipality .
Since 1853, the municipality has a stop at the railway Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons-Lyon-Perrache which trains of TER Auvergne Rhône-Alpes of the connection Moulins - Clermont-Ferrand is served.
history
Remains of an early bridge over the Allier can be dated to the third century AD. The Notre-Dame de la Ronde chapel is dated to the 11th and 12th centuries.
