Georgios "Giourkas" Seitaridis ( Greek Γεώργιος "Γιούρκας" Σεϊταρίδης , born June 4, 1981 in Piraeus ) is a former Greek football player .

Career

Seitaridis began his professional career at the Greek club PAS Ioannina , in whose youth department he had previously played. In summer 2001 he moved to the top Greek club Panathinaikos Athens . There he matured into a world-class defender , not least because of his appearances in the Champions League , and this was also shown at the 2004 European Championship in Portugal, where he won the title with Greece. He played through in all the Greek games and got a yellow card in the final.

After the European Championship, Seitaridis moved to the then Portuguese champions and Champions League winner FC Porto for a transfer fee of 3 million euros and won the World Cup there. At the beginning of the 2005/06 season he then moved again to the Russian club Dynamo Moscow , who paid 10 million euros for the Greek, which at that time was the highest amount that was ever spent on a Greek player. After a year at Dynamo Moscow, he moved to the 2006/07 season for a transfer fee of 6 million euros to the Spanish first division club Atlético Madrid . On April 29, 2009, he and Maniche , who moved to 1. FC Köln , were suspended from the game because of undisciplined behavior on the part of the Atlético Madrid management team. The contract was terminated at the end of the season.

National team

Seitaridis began his career in the Greek national team in the U21 national team of Greece, with which he also took part in the U21 European Championship 2002 in Switzerland . Seitaridis was eliminated with the Greeks in the group stage.

In the senior national team, he played for the first time in the European Championship qualification for the European Championship finals in Portugal. He played a key role as a right defender and made a significant contribution to qualifying for the tournament. During the European Championship in Portugal he was on the pitch in all games and also in the final and thus finally established himself in the national team. As reigning European champions, Greece and Seitaridis also competed in the 2005 Confederations Cup in Germany, but were eliminated in the preliminary round. It was only used in one game. Seitaridis also played for the Greek national team in qualifying for the World Cup finals in Germany. However, the Greeks missed the qualification as they could not prevail against Ukraine and Turkey.

Seitaridis was part of the Greek squad for the 2008 European Football Championship in Austria and Switzerland . In the first game against Sweden he played through, but in the second he was replaced by Giorgos Karagounis after 40 minutes due to an adductor injury . He then had to watch as Greece was eliminated from the tournament as bottom group.
