Attractions

  • According to the plans of the Saarlouis architect Alois Havener (1901–1981), the new Catholic parish church of St. Andreas with a free-standing tower was built between 1959 and 1960 to replace an older building that was demolished in 1969. The parish of Gisingen is said to have existed as early as the 11th century. The sacred building has numerous modern works of art that were created by Leo Kornbrust and Heinz Oliberius , among others . The large-scale art glazing of the church was designed in 1969 by the convent member of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Mauritius in Tholey , Robert "Bonifatius" Köck , who had earned a reputation in this field in Saarland since the 1950s. The modern glazing of the early Gothic abbey church windows in Tholey is one of his masterpieces. He also designed the windows of the Wallerfanger Church of St. Katharina and Barbara . The Gisinger windows were made in the workshop of Hans Bernhard Gossel, who was the director of glass painting at the Städel Art Institute and who often worked for Georg Meistermann, in Frankfurt am Main .
  • A restored Lothringerhaus- type farmhouse can be viewed in Gisingen . It is a classic single house with a residential wing, barn and stable. Under the eaves is a jamb floor with small windows. The listed " Haus Saargau " is part of a whole ensemble of Lorraine houses from the 18th century and today houses a local museum on the pre-industrial rural culture of the Saar region. The farmhouse shows a collection of historic Lorraine furniture from the 18th century, brought together by the pastor and folklorist Louis Pinck . Integrated into the rural museum is a collection of fireplace-taken and stove plates from the 19th century as evidence of the historical iron art casting of the Saarland and Lorraine regions. The cottage garden of the house was reconstructed as a herb and spice garden in 2006 and included as a particularly exemplary ensemble of gardens without borders in the Saar, Lorraine, and Luxembourg region. A meadow orchard with colonies of bees adjoins the garden.

Trivia

Gisingen is the birthplace of Mathias Dillinger (1831–1912, emigrated to the USA in 1854), the grandfather of John Dillinger , who was designated as public enemy No. 1 by the FBI as the first person . Mathias Dillinger came from a linen weaver family. His birthplace was in Gisinger Tutengass, today's street "Zum Scheidberg". It was demolished in 1940.
