Global Militarization Index 2014

The Global Militarization Index ( German for Global Militarisierungsindex ) is an index created by the Bonn International Center for Conversion that measures the militarization of various societies.

methodology

The Global Militarization Index is made up of the following three categories:

Military expenditure: Amount of military expenditure in relation to health expenditure as a share of the gross domestic product .

Military personnel: number of active armed forces in relation to the population and in relation to the number of practicing doctors . Paramilitary personnel have been included because in many countries the regular military alone does not adequately reflect the overall size of the armed forces. The number of reserve personnel in relation to the population also falls into this category.

Heavy weapons: number of heavy weapons in relation to the population. Heavy weapons here are all pieces of military equipment that fit into one of four categories: armored vehicles (armored personnel carriers, light tanks, battle tanks ), artillery (multiple rocket launchers, self-propelled artillery, towed artillery) 100 mm caliber, combat aircraft ( attack helicopters , fixed-wing fighter aircraft ) and large warships ( submarines , large surface fighters over Corvette size).

Countries according to the Global Militarization Index

The following list sorts the countries according to their degree of militarization according to the Global Militarization Index 2018, which was published in October 2018 and whose information applies to 2017. The values ​​in the three categories military expenditure, military personnel and heavy weapons are also given. Not all countries in the world are included in the index, since countries such as B. North Korea or Eritrea could not determine a sufficient amount of data.
