Goodbye June is an American rock band from Nashville , Tennessee . The band was formed in 2005.

history

In June 2005 the brother of guitarist Tyler Baker died in a traffic accident. After the funeral , Baker began writing music with cousins Landon Milbourn ( vocals ) and Brandon Qualkenbush (guitar). This eventually became the band Goodbye June, a reference to Baker's late brother. In 2009 the musicians moved from southern Indiana to Nashville , Tennessee . Three years later, the debut album Nor the Wild Music Flows was released via Cotton Valley Records . For the song Microscope , the band released a music video in which Jeff Fisher , then coach of the American football team of the St. Louis Rams can be seen.

The band toured North America and Europe for the first time in the fall of 2013 , before Goodbye June took first place in the Unsigned Music Competition a year later . A short time later the band was signed by the major label Interscope Records and played at the Louder Than Life festival in 2015 . In 2016 the band released the EP Danger in the Morning before the second studio album Magic Valley followed in spring 2017 . Goodbye June played at the Rock on the Range , Carolina Rebellion festivals. A short time later, the band split from Interscope. The second EP, Secrets in the Sunset, followed in 2018 via Suretone Records and a European tour supporting Greta Van Fleet . In early 2019, the band signed a new contract with Earache Records before touring Europe in summer 2019 at the Download Festival and in the opening act of ZZ Top . On October 25, 2019, the third studio album Community Inn was released.

style

Singer Landon Milbourne names bands like Rival Sons , The Black Keys , ZZ Top, Pink Floyd , but also gospel music as the main influences of the band. Another important source of inspiration is the album Will O the Wisp by Leon Russell . It is unusual that the band has neither a permanent bassist nor a drummer . According to Landon Milbourne, he and Brandon Qualkenbush play bass, drums and keyboards . Because of the family connection between the three musicians, Goodbye June want to remain a trio . At concerts, the band uses musicians who are friends. Jacob Thomas Jr. plays bass. The drums are played in the studio by Nathan Sexton and live by Kevin Smith. With their lyrics, Goodbye June want to "create something positive in the world that is only about hatred and rejection".

According to Frank Thießies from the German magazine Metal Hammer , the band, like Greta Van Fleet, could not absolve itself of the omnipresent influences of Led Zeppelin , but Goodbye June would be musically broader. Thießies also drew comparisons to bands like Blind Melon and Keane , while Milbourne's vocals are reminiscent of Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) and Shannon Hoon (Blind Melon). Jörg Staude from the German magazine Rock Hard described Goodbye June as blues-soaked hard rock that lives off the "impressive voice" of Landon Milbourne, which sounds like a mixture of Brian Johnson ( AC / DC ), Robert Plant and Steven Tyler ( Aerosmith ).
