Grand Prix of Hanover (cycling)
The Hanover Grand Prix was a regularly held track cycling event in Hanover . The competition was initiated at the end of the 19th century by Hermann Löns , at that time editor-in-chief of the Hannoversche Anzeiger , and held for the first time in 1897. Löns then reported on this first cycle race on June 13, 1897 in the daily newspaper.
After the Second World War and on October 5, 1945, the Hanover Grand Prix was held again with the approval of the British military authorities on the Velodrome at the Horse Tower . Here triumphed Jean Schorn before Walter Lohmann and Willy Rintelmann .
On a Saturday in 1949 Werner “Potz” Potzernheim won the Hanover Grand Prix on the track at the horse tower ahead of the favorite drivers Willy Trost , Hans Westerhold and Kaufmann; In addition to the proximity to the Hanoverian Continental AG, one of the reasons for Potzernhein's move in 1950 to Hanover, where he initially lived in a pacemaker cabin under the train at the horse tower.
Well-known names like Willy Arend , Walter Rütt and, more recently, Daniel Morelon , Michael Hübner and Lutz Heßlich can be found among the winners of the Grand Prix for Sprinters .
