Groen green party in Belgium . It appears in Flanders ( there is Ecolo in Wallonia ), but it is also represented in the entire Belgian Parliament and in the European Parliament. Groen is a member of the European Green Party and Global Greens .
(German: Green ) is aParty history
Initially, the party was founded under the party name Agalev ( A nders Ga an Lev en). The founding members were inspired by the Agalev social movement. This movement originated in the 1970s through the Jesuit Luc Versteylen . The movement combined environmental protection with left- wing Catholicism .
In the 1981 elections to the Belgian Parliament, the party won four percent of the vote and two seats in the Belgian Chamber of Deputies and one seat in the Belgian Senate . In the same election in 1981, the Walloon Greens ( Ecolo ) won two seats in the Chamber of Deputies and three seats in the Senate for the first time. The party was officially founded in 1982.
In the 1985 elections, Agalev won two more seats in the Chamber of Deputies and two more seats in the 1987 elections and another in 1991. So Agalev came in 1991 with seven seats in the Chamber of Deputies. After the 1999 elections, Agalev took part in government for the first time, and Agalev politician Magda Aelvoet became a cabinet member in Guy Verhofstadt's government .
In 2003 the party slipped under the five percent clause in the elections with 2.6 percent and was no longer represented in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. This election defeat led to a discussion within the party. As a result, the party name Agalev was changed to Groen . It was not until 2007 that the big ones managed to move into the Chamber of Deputies with 4 seats and one seat in the Senate.
