The Gustav-Heinemann-Oberschule ( short: GHO) is an integrated secondary school with upper secondary school in the Marienfelde district of Berlin .
The school is named after Gustav Heinemann , who was German Federal President from 1969 to 1974 .
School profile
The Gustav-Heinemann-Oberschule is one of the few schools in Europe that offer Japanese lessons as an optional subject for grades 5 to 13 , and one of the first to offer Japanese as a second foreign language from grade 5 onwards since August 2006 .
In addition to the normal lessons, a variety of other activities (AGs) are also offered at this school, most of which take place outside of school hours, sometimes even on weekends. Participation is voluntary. Some examples: Buddhism lessons, Koch AG, Homepage AG, Musical AG, Theater AG, model aircraft and model railway AG. The remarkable modular model railway system of the Schüler-AG has been built since 1982 and is based on the four-track Berlin Stadtbahn with S-Bahn and long-distance trains . This large-scale system has already been presented to the public several times at model railroad exhibitions in Berlin and abroad.
A large number of sports working groups are offered for students interested in sports. Some examples: badminton , basketball , soccer , cycling , cross-country skiing and volleyball .
The students of the Gustav Heinemann Comprehensive School regularly travel to their partner schools in Charenton-le-Pont and Niort ( France ), to Delft ( Netherlands ), Posen ( Poland ), Sydney ( Australia ) and Varberg ( Sweden ), Beijing ( China ) and Toyohashi ( Japan ).
The school also has a good reputation, which enables it to have many class discussions with celebrities and politicians. Examples are Kofi Annan , Roman Herzog , Johannes Rau , Gerhard Schröder , Angela Merkel , Franz Müntefering , Klaus Wowereit , Dieter Hoeneß , Gregor Gysi , Iris Berben and Michael Müller .
School history
The Mittelstufenzentrum in Tirschenreuther Ring 48 was established in 1974 as the "2nd Oberschule Berlin-Tempelhof" as a ten-class integrated comprehensive school with an upper level. On October 4th, 1977 the school was named "Gustav-Heinemann-Oberschule". Until 1981 the headmaster was Helmut Meyer. His successor was his deputy Karl Pentzliehn. Under his leadership, the school became an additive comprehensive school with integrative elements (quote: Pentzliehn). At the same time, the proportion of high school recommended students in a year could be increased from under 20% to over 40%. Pentzliehn held his office for a year after reaching the regular retirement age. A further extension of his period of service was refused by the school authorities despite intensive efforts by some students and parents, so that he had to retire in summer 2008. The school's strengths and weaknesses at the end of his term of office are presented in detail in the report on the school inspection from November 2008 (linked from the homepage). In August 2010, the new headmaster Carsten Hintze took up his post.
The GHO celebrates its 40th anniversary in autumn 2014 and has published a commemorative publication on the occasion.
building
In 1988 the school had to leave its main building at Tirschenreuther Ring 48 after toxic asbestos was found in the walls. She was temporarily housed in the currently vacant buildings of the Pedagogical University in Berlin-Lankwitz.
At the beginning of the school year 1990/1991, the school was able to move into replacement buildings on a spacious school site at the end of Waldsassener Strasse. Six prefabricated houses marked with the letters A to F were erected on their new campus . In its center is the school yard with seating and green areas as well as a Japanese garden. Although this complex was only intended as a temporary alternative accommodation, it is still used as a school location today.
From 2011 the construction of a new school building should begin at the old location, where the gym is still located today. After several planning approaches, construction is not scheduled to start until 2019. The new school building is then expected to be completed in 2021.
