Gustav Ernst Wilhelm Emil Sasse , von Sasse since 1896 (born September 27, 1824 in Aschersleben , † March 12, 1904 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 1st foot artillery brigade .

Life

Gustav was the son of the Prussian Prime Lieutenant Johann Friedrich Sasse (1789–1831) and his wife Mathilde, née von Seelhorst (1799–1877).

Military career

After attending the community school in Aschersleben and the Frankeschen Foundation in Halle (Saale) as well as the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin , Sasse was transferred to the Prussian Army on August 12, 1841 as an aggregated second lieutenant of the 4th Artillery Brigade. For further training, he graduated from the United Artillery and Engineering School from October 1842 to June 1844 . He was then commanded from July 1 to September 30, 1844 for the siege exercises in Stettin . On November 12, 1844, Sasse was appointed and classified as an artillery officer with a patent from October 14, 1841. In 1849, during the suppression of the Baden Revolution , he took part in the battles at Ötigheim, the Federbach and the siege of Rastatt. From October 1 to November 1, 1850, he was in command of the Army Corps in Baden to investigate Bavaria and Vorarlberg. From October 1, 1851 to September 30, 1854 he attended the General War School and at the end of July 1852 was promoted to Prime Lieutenant. He then came to the Minden Fortress on July 1, 1855 as a leader of the workers' department . He was promoted to captain there on October 1, 1857 , and appointed battery chief in the 4th Artillery Brigade on April 21, 1859 . On May 5, 1866, he became commander of the column division. During the German War he fought in the Battle of Königgrätz .

With the transfer to the 1st Brandenburg Artillery Regiment , on August 23, 1866, after the war, he was appointed as a major commander of the II (foot) division. This was followed on October 16, 1867, a position in the Guard Artillery Brigade and as an artillery officer from the square in Wittenberg . In this capacity, Sasse rose to lieutenant colonel on July 26, 1870 and was during the war against France from November 9, 1870 commander of the fifth division of the siege artillery in Alsace, which was active in the siege of Belfort . After the preliminary peace he returned to his peace position in Wittenberg on April 1, 1871. Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , he was appointed commander of the cavalry division of the 1st Silesian Field Artillery Regiment No. 6 on October 18, 1871 .
