Hector Elizondo ( Spanish spelling: Héctor Elizondo ; born December 22, 1936 in New York City ) is an American actor of Puerto Rican descent.

Life

Elizondo's parents immigrated to New York in the 1930s. They had two children, Hector was the older of the two. From a young age, Elizondo demonstrated his talent in sports and music. When he was ten he sang in Frank Murray's boys choir. After graduating from Junior High School in 1951, he enrolled at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts . Elizondo also attended an ordinary public school, where he attracted attention with his achievements in basketball and baseball . His baseball game even drew the attention of the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates scouts.

In 1954, Elizondo began studying at New York City College with the aim of becoming a history teacher. However, he became a father during the first semester and left college for a full-time job to support his family. He later divorced and received full custody of his son Rodd.

From 1962 on, Elizondo studied dance with the Ballet Arts Company at Carnegie Hall . In 1963, Elizondo played minor roles in the plays Kill the One-Eyed Man and The Great White Hope . He was able to celebrate his first major success as a god in the form of a Puerto Rican sauna employee in the play Steambath , for which he received an Obie Award .

In the 1980s, Elizondo befriended director Garry Marshall , who was convinced of Elizondo's talent, so that he received a role in all of Marshall's 17 movies over the following years. Their first film together was Kiss Me Doc! or operation succeeded - patient dead , followed by normal love . His role in Pretty Woman , in which he was seen as a hotel manager, only lasted ten minutes, but was very successful and helped Elizondo to an audience success and a nomination for the Golden Globe . Elizondo usually took on prominent supporting roles in the cinema.

Hector Elizondo has appeared in over 80 films, including: Valdez (1971) as a Mexican bandit, in Stop the Death Ride of Subway 123 (1974) as a psychopathic murderer, in Murder at the Embassy (episode 33 of Columbo ) as a murderous embassy employee Hassan Salah, in The Fanatic (1981) as the persistent detective, as the middle-class family man in Flamingo Kid (1984), as the football coach in Armadillo Bears (1991), as the Greek cafe owner in Frankie & Johnny (1991), as serene detective in Beverly Hills Cop III (1994) and as the Queen's chief security officer in Suddenly Princess ! Part I and II . In the comedy Tortilla Soup - The Spice of Life (2001) he played the lead role of the chef Martin Naranjo .

He also had a great success in the television series Chicago Hope (141 episodes, 1994-2000), in which he was the chief physician Dr. Philip Watters portrayed. From 2008 to 2009 he succeeded Stanley Kamel , who died unexpectedly of a heart attack in April 2008, in the role of psychotherapist Dr. Neven Bell seen in the television series Monk .

Elizondo was also featured in five episodes of the television series Grey's Anatomy as the father of Dr. Torres ( Sara Ramírez ).

Elizondo is married to actress Carolee Campbell, whom he met on the NBC soap opera Doctors .
