Hößgang is a village and a cadastral municipality in the Lower Austrian municipality of Neustadtl an der Donau .

history

Map of Hösgang (center right) from 1721

The historical term Hößgang describes the path along the right bank of the Danube on the Strudengau between Ardagger and Ybbs on the Danube , which was previously used for towing and was difficult to access from the south. In the village of Hößgang he could be left in the direction of Neustadtl. This site was previously secured by the Hößgang (or Mitter-Lueg) castle, which first appeared in the Wallseer Urbar in 1449, but is now only present as a field of rubble. In the 18th century there was a lime distillery here, which burned the limestone debris transported from the Danube into masonry lime, and several timber merchants. With the advent of motorized shipping and the relocation of goods traffic to the Western Railway , the Hößgang lost its importance.

With the construction of the Ybbs-Persenbeug power plant, and especially in the 1970s, the place, also located on an oxbow lake south of the island of Wörth , was rediscovered for recreational purposes and redeveloped in a wave of settlement. Today the place can be reached via a road branching off at the Danube bridge Grein and from the south via Neustadtl. The section between Hößgang and Freyenstein, on the other hand, is only approved for pedestrians and bicycles.

Settlement development

At the turn of the year 1979/1980 there were 34 building areas on a total of 9538 m² and 79 gardens on 139,981 m², in 1989/1990 there were already 114 building areas. In 1999/2000 the number of building areas had grown to 287, with 140 buildings in existence. In 2009/2010 there were 147 buildings on 312 construction areas.

Agriculture

The cadastral community is shaped by forestry. 618 hectares were used for agriculture at the turn of the year 1979/1980 and 1909 hectares were forest areas. In 1999/2000 agriculture was carried out on 400 hectares and in 1985 hectares were designated as areas used for forestry. At the end of 2018, 350 hectares were used as agricultural land and forestry was carried out on 1956 hectares. The average soil climate in Hößgang is 28.1 (as of 2010).
