The HMS Springer (P265) was a submarine of the British Royal Navy . The submarine was handed over to Israel in 1958 .

history

The Springer was a boat from the fourth batch of the S-Class . This lot is also known as the Subtle class . She was laid down on May 8, 1944 at Cammell Laird in Birkenhead, northwest England , launched on May 14, 1945 and was commissioned by the Royal Navy on August 2, 1945.

The submarine was handed over to Israel in 1958 and renamed Tanin . It was baptized in the new name by David Ben-Gurion personally.

The Tanin was used in the 1967 Six Day War. The submarine dropped commandos at Alexandria to attack the city's port. She also attempted a torpedo attack on an Egyptian sloop , but was pushed off and damaged by depth charges.

The Tanin was decommissioned in 1972. It served as a torpedo target for the Dolphin and was sunk.

The name Tanin was passed on to a modern, German-built Dolphin class boat in 2014 .
