Hahn is the family name of a German-Baltic noble family, which was resident in the Duchy of Courland and Semgallia and on the Baltic island of Ösel . The original name was Hane, this was an old Mecklenburg noble family and can be documented until 1230.

The Kurland line dealt with here branched off from the main Hahn line of Mecklenburg . She later carried the title of baron or baron (baroness, baroness, baroness, baroness). Ludolf Hahn (around 1300) is named as the ancestor of the Baltic lines, whose descendants later founded their headquarters with Heinrich von Hahn (around 1518) in Postenden near Talsen . The öselschen von Hahns look back on Johann August von Hahn (* around 1725 - 1799) as their progenitor. Both tribal lines carried the same coat of arms.

According to the genealogical handbooks of Kurland and Ösels, both branches come from Mecklenburg and although both tribal families have the same coat of arms, “a genealogical connection between the two families cannot be proven”. In 1476, an ancestor of Heinrich von Hahn (around 1518) was enfeoffed by the Teutonic Order with the village of Postenden.

The main seat of the noble von Hahn family in Courland was Postenden Castle near Talsen, a small town in what is now western Latvia , the former Duchy of Courland and Semgallia .

Lineage Ösel

The brothers Johann August and Wilhelm von Hahn from Mecklenburg emigrated to Russia in the middle of the 18th century. Johann August was a real councilor of state and post director in Saint Petersburg, he was accepted into the Russian service aristocracy and later accepted into the knighthood of Ösel . In 1849 Ernst and Karl von Hahn were incorporated into the Oselsche nobility register as a result of their application . The family acquired the Lahhentagge estate and managed the Neu-Löwel, Wexholm, Cöln and Randefer estates .

Heinrich von Hahn acquired the estate in Postenden near Talsen around 1518 , which became the headquarters of the Courland Hahns.

Soups

The Asuppen estate (Aizupe in the Kandava / Kandau district) was owned by the Courland Duke Gotthard Kettler (1517 - 1587) from 1561, and in 1635 it was owned by Salomon Henning, who bequeathed it to his descendants. From 1719 the Peter von Koskull family took over the estate and in 1793 it was taken over by the Hahn family. Adolf Georg Wilhelm von Hahn (1749 - 1823) had the manor house built between 1820 and 1823. The adjacent park was created between 1830 and 1840. The estate was owned by the von Hahn family from 1793 until it was expropriated in 1920.

Schnepeln

The manor house in Schnepeln, which was also called the castle , was built at the beginning of the 19th century and was used by Baron von Hahn as a hunting lodge . The roof was covered with clay tiles. The highlights of the small castle were the decorative finish of the facade , the portal railing and several ornate doors. The castle hall was decorated with beautiful ceiling paintings. Today the manor houses a primary school.
