The Hammerbach is an approximately 7.2 km long orographic left or northern tributary of the Diemel in the East Westphalian district of Höxter in North Rhine-Westphalia . It flows from the southern foothills of the Eggegebirge and flows in the southern part of the Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge Nature Park .

The Hammerbach rises in the southern foothills of the Egge Mountains around 2.3 km northwest of the former Hardehausen monastery , which in turn is around 3 km north-northwest of the Warburg district of Scherfede . Its source is in the forest of the Max-Parpat-Hain a few meters south of the Eggeweg at about 397  m above sea level. NN .

Initially, the predominantly southward Hammer stream running through a Founded in 2002 and about 225 hectare nature reserve cliffs and rocks sea at Hardehausen with (NSG number 318,669th) Luzulo - and Woodruff - Book forest and brook ash forest and rugged sandstone rocks and scree fields.

After breaking through the rocky cliffs and shortly after taking in a stream coming from the Axel spring , the Hammerbach , which runs mainly through agricultural areas in the forest-lined valley, passes on Kreisstraße  23 at about 240  m above sea level. NN the Hardehausen Monastery, after which it flows west past the Korintenteich . To the south of it, the Hammerbach flows through part of the approximately 170 hectare Scherfede bison enclosure , founded in 1958 , in which, in addition to bison , “white deer ”, tarpans and wild boars can be observed; the Schwarzbach flows into the west of the enclosure . Then he passes the Hardehauser Hammerhof from 1603 , which once served as an iron hammer and where the Hammerhof Forest Information Center has been set up since 2004 .

Then the Hammerbach happens in the west of Scherfede located Scherfede-West the Klusmühle . There the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway , Bundesstrasse 7 and Bundesstrasse 252 run close to each other over the stream, which a little later rises to around 190  m above sea level. NN flows into the Weser tributary Diemel, which comes from the south-west and flows a bit along the southern boundary of the nature park .

Tributaries

The longest tributary of the Hammerbach is the 6.2 km long Schwarzbach . One of the rivers in the upper reaches is the 2.8 km long Alpenbach, which flows through the Hardehausen monastery .
