Hampton is a city in Bradford County in the US state of Florida with 500 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Hampton is about 10 km south of Starke and about 70 km southwest of Jacksonville .

history

The place received its first railroad connection in 1859 through the Florida Railroad between Fernandina and Gainesville . The place became a railway junction when the Georgia Southern and Florida Railway opened a railway line between Valdosta ( Georgia ), Lake City and Palatka in 1890 . After the early bankruptcy of the company, it went as a daughter in 1895 to the Southern Railway , which in turn merged in 1990 with the Norfolk and Western to the Norfolk Southern Railway . The line itself was shut down between Lake City and Palatka in the late 1980s after Norfolk Southern acquired the route usage rights between Jacksonville and Palatka from CSX . The section from Lake Butler via Hampton to Palatka has now been converted by the Florida Department of Transportation into the 76 km long Palatka-Lake Butler State Trail .

The city expanded its urban area in the form of a narrow strip to the nearby US Highway 301 in the mid-1990s . This was done with the intention of improving the city's finances by carrying out speed controls on the route section in the city area. The increasingly excessive controls, which between 2010 and 2012 brought in around 600,000 US dollars alone, aroused resentment in the population and in politics in the surrounding area. In 2014, a state audit revealed, in addition to other serious irregularities, that the city was unable to provide any accounting documents and that considerable sums of money had been embezzled. The extent of the violations and the inability of the city to rebuild its administration led to the state threat to dissolve the city as a local authority .
