The Hans Stieber Prize is a sponsorship prize for composers of serious music , which is awarded by the non-incorporated Hans Stieber Foundation of the State Association of Saxony-Anhalt German Composers eV (LVDK) based in Halle (Saale) . Name giver and dedicatee is Hans Stieber (1886–1969), composer and founding director of the State University for Theater and Music Halle .

After Stieber's death, it was donated by his widow Gertl Stieber from his inheritance in 1977 and given annually until 1989, primarily to young composers from the GDR . After the political change , the heirs of Stieber asserted a claim to the surrender of the foundation's assets, which meant that the awarding of the prize had to be suspended for the time being.

A judgment by the Higher Regional Court in Naumburg and a financial increase by the Saalesparkasse in Halle made it possible to revive the price in 2000 by the LVDK under the direction of Thomas Buchholz . He announced the prize every two to four years as part of a competition for young composers as well as for musicologists who publish in the field of new music . Since then, it has been awarded as part of the contemporary music festival Hallische Musiktage .

Competition regulations

The competition conditions were adjusted over the course of the 2000s. Applicants up to the age of 23 or 25 who are resident in the Federal Republic of Germany can take part. In order to deepen Germany's relationship with Eastern Europe and the CIS countries , the residence criterion was dropped for these participants.

An independent jury selects the winners from anonymous scores . It consists of the board of trustees of the Hans Stieber Foundation (chairman: Willi Vogl , later Bernhard Schneyer ), other appointed jurors and the advisory jury member Thomas Buchholz. The members are usually composers (including Günter Neubert ) and conductors.

The divisible prize money amounts to 1,000 euros (previously 2,000 D-Mark). In addition, non-cash prizes will be awarded, including participation in a summer course for the Saxony-Anhalt composer class . The award ceremony will take place during the Hallische Musiktage . To this end, a gala concert will be held in the Handel House in Halle.

The scores of the award-winning works will be included in the archive of the library of the Handel House Foundation in Halle.
