Hans Pollack

Hans Pollack (born July 8, 1891 in Linz , Austria-Hungary ; † August 14, 1968 there ) was an Austrian painter , graphic artist and bank clerk .

He is one of the founding members of the artists ' association MAERZ and the Mühlviertel artists ' guild . From 1950 to 1953 and from 1955 to 1965 he was President of the Upper Austrian Artists Association .

Life and work

Pollack was born into a merchant family in Linz, attended by the training school , the Realschule in Linz and entered after graduation as a civil servant in the 1909 Allgemeine Sparkasse Linz and was stopped there by the war effort until his retirement in 1942 worked. He was a soldier in the First World War on the Eastern Front and disarmed as an Austro-Hungarian lieutenant in the reserve in November 1918. In 1936 he joined the illegal NSDAP and from 1938 to 1945 a member of the party.

Pollack had a son from his first marriage to Maria Wagmeister and was married to Hildegard Gfrerer in 1931, from whom he divorced in 1945. Hildegard had entered into a connection with Gerhard Bast and had a son with him (Martin). The two married in February 1945. After Bast's death in 1946, Hans and Hildegard Pollack remarried in 1947. So Hans Pollack is Martin Pollack's stepfather .

In 1944 his house in Linz including his studio was destroyed by bombs and he had to live temporarily with his wife and three children on a remote farm in Styria . He rebuilt the house in Linz on a smaller scale so that it could be occupied in 1948.

He acquired his painting skills autodidactically . He was friends with Franz Sedlacek from a young age and drew a lot with pen , pencil and chalk , watercolored , drew posters and bookplates , painted large figural pictures in oil and tempera and occupied himself with nude painting .

After his retirement he devoted himself entirely to his artistic work. On trips to Vienna , Munich , Dresden , Paris , Basel , Florence , Milan , Venice and Siena he got to know pictures of the galleries there.

From 1945 his artistic activity developed in three directions: landscape painting in oil ( Mühlviertel , South Tyrolean Dolomites and compositions ), portraits in colored chalk and graphics (chalk drawings, especially city images) and reed pen drawings using a technique he developed himself .

From the 1950s the hilly landscape of the Mühlviertel was one of his favorite objects.

Art associations

Together with Franz Sedlacek, Klemens Brosch and Franz Brosch , Heinz Bitzan and Max Fellerer, Pollack was one of the founders of the MAERZ artists' association and was part of it from 1934 to 1938 and after the merger with the Upper Austrian Art Association and the renaming of the Upper Danube Artists Association from 1942 to 1945 President before. During this time, Pollack was deputy to Ernst August von Mandelsloh , the regional director of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts , and advisory board for the fine arts in the city's cultural office in Linz.

After the Second World War , Pollack was one of the founding members of the Mühlviertel Artists' Guild . From 1950 to 1953 and from 1955 to 1965 he was President of the Upper Austrian Artists Association . In 1966 he became honorary president there.
