Haug
Haug is a German family name .
Origin and meaning
The family name originated either from the first name Hugo or from another short form of a first name composed of mhd. Hug- ("Sinn, Geist, Verstand") (for example Hugbald , Hu (g) bert etc.). This makes Haug one of the so-called patronymics . The first bearer of the name was therefore simply named after his father as the 'son of ...' for purposes of differentiation.
A derivation from Middle High German houc ' hill ' is rarely possible.
variants
The name Haug is particularly common in Germany and Austria , as well as in Norway. Other shapes are Hauck , ((Haugk)) and Huch , and with a diminutive - suffix , Huchel ; in North Friesland there is the first name "Hauke".
In southern Baden and German-speaking Switzerland , the non- diphthongized form of Hug is more familiar; in Sweden the name occurs under the spelling Håug .
