Hawley is a village in the Hart District in northeast Hampshire .
location
Hawley borders the village of Blackwater to the north . It is on the western edge of the Blackwater Valley , about 5 kilometers (3 miles) north of Farnborough . To the east is Camberley, approximately two miles . London is approximately 53 kilometers (33 miles) to the northeast. To the south, Hawley is bordered by the village of Cove .
history
Hawley was first mentioned in writing in 1248 as Halely, Halle and Hallee, and from 1280 as Hallegh. The town emerged as Hallie and Halley in documents relating to the Cathedral Chapter of Winchester Cathedral in the years 1541-1547 on. The name goes back to the term `` Healhleah '' or Healhaleah . In Old and Middle English, this means clearing or pasture at the cape or protruding corner of the administrative unit. Historical spellings also include Hawleye, Halle and Hallie. The area around Yateley and Hawley were added to the manor of Crondall in 1567 . The Parish of Hawley was created out of the Parish of Yateley in 1838.
politics
The Blackwater and Hawley Town Council takes as a democratically legitimized body the interests of the residents of Hawley. Founded as the Hawley Parish Council in 1894, the body originally consisted of 14 members. In 1991 the number was reduced to seven. On March 1, 1995, the Hawley and Blackwater representations were merged to form Blackwater and Hawley Town Council , which has eight members since 2011. In the House of Commons election , Hawley is a member of the Aldershot constituency . This has been represented since 2017 by Leo Docherty , a member of the Conservative Party .
Culture and sights
Buildings
The Parish Church of Hawley was 1837 neugoritschen built style. An extension was made in 1857 by John Clacy from Reading . Six years later, the further expansion took place, in which the architect Charles Buckeridge added a triumphal arch , a ribbed vault and an apse . The church tower was built in 1882. The building has been a listed building since 1987 .
With the All Saints' Church, South Hawley, there is another church building on Chapel Lane and Fernhill Road. This church goes back to a chapel that was built in 1881. Originally the building consisted of a single nave , an apse and a sanctuary . A sacristy was added in 1890 and a portal in 1902 . The church was in 1955 in the possession of the Church of England over and was March 8, 1955 by the Bishop of Guildford ordained . The parish was dissolved in 1976 and has since been housed in the All Saints Church and Center. Today the church building is empty and unused.
Green spaces and recreation
Hawley Lake is about 3 kilometers (2 miles) west of town. This lake is used by the British Army as a sailing area, but is also open to private individuals. Hawley Meadows is a flood protection area that also offers protection to numerous animal species.
Hawley as a location
Hawley and its surroundings have been used as a location for numerous television and cinema films. For example, scenes from the James Bond film Die Another Day , which take place in the Korean demilitarized zone , were filmed in the forests of Hawley . Also shooting Johnny English - now all the more! and Avengers: Age of Ultron took place in Hawley.
Infrastructure
education
There are two schools in Hawley. Founded in 1845, Hawley Primary School is an elementary school for girls and boys between the ages of 4 and 11. It is currently attended by 315 students in 11 classes. The Hawley Place School is a private facility that includes a kindergarten and provides full-time school for students up to the age of 16 . It is currently attended by around 350 students.
traffic
For motor traffic, Hawley is served by the M3 motorway, exit 4 of which is approximately 4 kilometers (2 miles) south of the center. On school days, a bus line operated by the Stagecoach Group connects the town with Aldershot and Fox Lane . The nearest train station is in Blackwater. From here trains run by the Great Western Railway company every half hour to Redhill and Gatwick Airport or to Reading . There is an abandoned runway in the Hawley Woods .
