The Hechtgraben is a good one and a half kilometers long, sluggish and straightened flowing left and northeastern tributary of the Wetter in the Hessian Wetteraukreis in a muddy bed on the steep edge of a 20-30 meter dep1high step in a flat valley there.

geography

course

The Hechtgraben begins at a height of about 130  m above sea level. NHN east of the Friedberg district of Dorheim through the confluence of three trenches in the LSG Auenverbund Wetterau . The western, about 300 m long ditch begins on an unpaved field path in grassland, on which the mobile barn for free-range laying hens (including rooster) repeatedly stands. Until it joins the other source ditches, it is overgrown with trees on one side on the left bank. The eastern, about 150 m long tree-lined ditch also begins on an unpaved field path , in an area with bushes, which also has an approximately 160 m long inflow from outside the LSG, which is in a herb corridor on the south side of the asphalt path from Naturland -Hof is in the district "Dorheimer Bergwerk" (formerly lignite mining ), the Alte Bergwerkstrasse . The middle ditch is again covered with trees. It begins on Alte Bergwerkstrasse at the outlets of drainage pipes from the surrounding arable land near Friedberger SoLaWi - vegetable field . About 50 m to the south, under high voltage lines , all three ditches unite in the grassland to form the Hechtgraben . All three trenches only carry water temporarily.

After about 100 m, in which the creek bed has seepage springs , a 400 m long trench, also lined with trees and spanned by high-voltage lines, flows from outside the LSG, starting at the asphalt bike and field path on the east, which runs in north-south direction Outskirts . From its mouth, the Hechtgraben is water-bearing all year round . After 200 meters, a ditch almost 200 m long and densely covered with bushes and trees opens from the left, which begins on a dirt road on the eastern edge of the LSG. (It is the remainder of a drainage ditch from the former lignite mine.) The ditch and the field path also form the boundaries of FFH area no. 5619-306 "Wetterau grassland areas." After 20 meters, this ditch is followed by another 230 m long ditch from the right, lined with trees and also border of the FFH area. It rises on an unpaved field path, also the border of the FFH area, under a high-voltage line . Between this right tributary and the longer and higher right ditch, a grassland area is demarcated with several high-voltage pylons, on which stands a single mast over ten meters high with a stork's nest, which has been regularly occupied by storks since the 2000s . Below its confluence with the Hechtgraben, an algae pond up to 100 m² in size has been created.

At river km 1.15 the Hechtgraben meets the partially paved Kuhweidweg from Dorheim, a half-sided avenue . A fourth right ditch runs on its tree-lined north side, which begins on the asphalt bike and field path on the eastern border of the buildings au . It flows into it after almost ½ km. At its mouth there are still arch-like components made of red sandstone , with which the ditch near the mouth into the Hechtgraben was bridged. The almost twelve hectare NSG " Am Hechtgraben bei Dorheim " begins on the south side of the Kuhweidweg . The Hechtgraben is about 750 m in it (in the flora-fauna habitat it is about 500 m more, 100 m above and 400 m below the NSG), forming either its western or its eastern border and, as it is always lined with trees, bushes and herbs, clearly marked. At the edge of the NSG, several trench pockets have been created on the Hechtgraben to enrich the structures previously used for agriculture. In addition, a more than 1000 m² large pond with an island was dredged on its lower course, at about 0.75 km, on the left bank. The roughly triangular fishing pond below, almost 1000 m² in size, was included in the NSG and withdrawn from human use. On the south-eastern edge of the NSG there was an old dam so that the surrounding grassland could be used as water meadows. Its function was restored with modern materials at km 0.45.

On a cross country lane at km 0.7, on which the NSG can be entered, the direction of the Hechtgraben is diverted from south to southwest, at the fishing pond again to west-southwest, due to a spur of the ridge adjacent to the east (the approx. 160  m high plate or the Red Mountain near the Friedberg district of Bauernheim ). So he leaves the NSG straightened, accompanied on the left bank by a paved dirt road, which is also the boundary to Bauernheim. At 0.25 km, where the dirt road is away from the Hechtgraben, there are traces of beavers that live in the nearby weather . The tree population disappears almost completely, the body of water appears as one with an approximately triangular cross-section. After a last left turn, it flows out at an altitude of 126  m above sea level. NHN west of the Friedberg district of Bauernheim from the left and north in the Wetter .

River system

biology

Knotty
celery at a path crossing in the NSG

The Hechtgraben is one of the very few known bodies of water in the Wetterau district in which Apium nodiflorum or (current scientific name) Helosciadium nodiflorum occurs, precisely the (botanically the ) knot-flowered celery. So far, finds from the river system of the USA , in particular the Seebach or Leihgraben , are known for the Wetteraukreis . From the Wetter river system , only the isolated find at the Pfingstbrunnen in the Friedberg industrial area south was known as a place of growth that drains into the Straßbach . This is a tributary of the Wetter, but has a poor biological water quality, which contrary to the general trend also deteriorated annually. It is to be hoped that the statutory introduction of wider waterfront strips from 2021 will bring an improvement that the knot-blooming celery will also be able to thrive in the Straßbach.

Further finds are known from an NSG on the Wetter near Münzenberg and an NSG on the Nidda near Okarben .

History

Maps from the 19th century show the Hechtgraben as a system of meandering brooks into which a drainage ditch (still partially preserved today) with the sewage from the lignite mine at the eastern edge of the elevation flowed. The mined mined brown coal was used in the former Nauheim to boil salt from the brine of the holes drilled. On the occasion of a prolonged flooding of the meadows at the beginning of the 20th century, the streams were straightened in the course of a field preparation and the Hechtgraben partially relocated to the border with Bauernheim. In the 1930s, the formerly [meander | meandering] weather below Dorheim was straightened out. The resulting drying up of the meadows made intensive livestock farming possible on them, especially with horses. Both of these resulted in a decline in the characteristic pipe grass meadows , which is why areas were taken out of use at the beginning of the 1980s and later some of the meadows were placed under protection. In the 2000s, it was placed under protection as an FFH area and as an EU bird sanctuary .
