The Heiligenberg lies in the east of the Richelsdorf Mountains between the Gerstungener districts Neustädt (southeast) and Sallmannshausen (east-southeast) and the Herleshausen districts Unhausen (north-northwest), Breitzbach (north-northeast), Nesselröden (northeast) and Wommen (east-northeast). Its summit region and the southern slope belong to Gerstungen, mainly to the district Neustädt, and its northern part belongs to Herleshausen, mainly to the district Breitzbach.

The Hehrengraben flows south past the Heiligenberg and , after flowing through Neustädt, flows into the Fulda source river Werra , which runs east of the elevation . The Breitzbach , which feeds the Nesse in Nesselröden , flows through Unhausen and Breitzbach to the north . The latter flows into the Werra east-northeast of the mountain in Wommen.

Name, history, usage

The name of the mountain is in the table sheet from 1854 Der Heiligenberg (without mountain height). Kirchwaldskopf (at 379.1  m ) can be found in later maps . Modern cards are inconsistent in their naming. Both names are reminiscent of former ownership, because the forest was owned by the Neustadt parish, among others. During the GDR era, the mountain was in a restricted area; Barely 500 m from the inner-German border , there was a visual lane through the forest to prevent refugees from breaking through. The summit region and the southern slope of the mountain are forested, the northern slope, apart from its wooded high areas, is used for agriculture and the north-eastern part is used for forestry.

On the other side of the A 4 and roughly parallel to it runs in the Werra valley from Wommen through Neustädt to Gerstungen, the state road  1021, from which the district road  505 branches off to Sallmannshausen at Neustädt .
