Heinrich Schneider (political scientist)

Heinrich Schneider (born August 10, 1929 in Brandenburg an der Havel ; † April 1, 2018 in Perchtoldsdorf ) was a German political scientist .

Life

Heinrich Schneider, son of the doctor Georg Heinrich Schneider and his wife Clara, studied after graduating from high school in Bamberg the subjects philosophy , pedagogy , literature , theater studies , psychology , political science and sociology at the Philosophical-Theological University of Bamberg (now Otto-Friedrich University Bamberg ), from 1950 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and from 1953 at the American Case Western Reserve University . In 1955 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. From 1955 to 1959 Schneider was involved in the European Movement and was a lecturer and deputy director here. From 1959 to 1962 he was a lecturer at the Academy for Political Education in Tutzing.

In 1963 he was offered a professorship for political science at the PH Hannover . From 1968 to 1971 Schneider was professor for philosophy of politics and ideology criticism at the University of Vienna . From 1971 to 1991 he was full professor of political science in Vienna and its head of the institute. In 1995/1996 he held the Jacques Delors Chair for European Politics at RWTH Aachen University . From 1996 to 2001 Schneider taught and researched in Aachen . He was visiting professor at the Danube University Krems . For many years he taught security policy at the National Defense Academy of the Austrian Armed Forces .

Act

Schneider's teaching and research focus was on international politics, European integration, security policy, political education, and the history and theory of political thought. He has had over 500 publications in books, articles and series. From 1987 to 2018 he was editor of Integration magazine . He has published over 500 publications in books, essays and series.

Schneider held numerous honorary positions. From 1955 to 1958 he was Federal Chairman of the Young European Federalists . In addition, he had been a member of the Europa-Union Deutschland since 1949, of which he was vice-president from 1955 to 1971. From 1973 to 2001 he was Honorary Chairman of the Scientific Directorate of the Institute for European Politics in Berlin . He had advisory mandates on security policy issues, among other things he was Deputy Head of Mission of the Holy See to the CSCE / OSCE . He was a member of the Austrian Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace ( Iustitia et Pax ). From 1970 to 1976 he was President of the Catholic Association of Academics Austria and was also Vice-President of the Catholic Action Austria and also chairman of the Catholic Lay Council of Austria. He was chairman of the board of trustees of the Catholic Social Academy Austria.

Heinrich Schneider was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land . In 1967 he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Eugène Cardinal Tisserant and invested in the Papal Lay Order on April 29, 1967 in St. Paulus Cathedral in Münster in Westphalia by Lorenz Cardinal Jaeger . His job-related move to Vienna was later followed by a move to the Baden-Wiener Neustadt Commandery of the Austrian Lieutenancy. Most recently he was a Grand Officer (Commander with a star) of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.

Heinrich Schneider has received several awards, including the Grand Cross of the Papal Order of Gregory , the Cardinal Opilio Rossi Medal, the Great Silver Medal for Services to the Republic of Austria, the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union Gold medal with a star as well as the Wilhelm Hartel Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Cardinal Innitzer Prize .
