Life

The son of a worker from Upper Silesia , Kluss, joined the Air Force in 1957. On the second path of education he got into the officer career . He completed his flying training in Canada . He later performed various functions in air defense . He was also deployed at the NATO headquarters in Brussels .

From 1977 to 1985 he worked in the military counterintelligence service, most recently as commander of MAD Group 3 in Düsseldorf .

On August 29, 1983, on the occasion of the blockades of barracks by peace activists, he published the article When imprisonment becomes a popular sport in the FAZ column , with an appeal to Heinrich Böll not to support these actions. In the FAZ edition of September 7, 1983, Böll replied in the form of a multi-page open letter to Kluss entitled We are not endangering democracy, we are making use of it.

In 1984, Kluss got involved in the Kießling affair as the commander of MAD Group 3, which was commissioned with the investigation in 1983 , where he was "found guilty" according to his own statements. He had to fight for his rehabilitation for three years. Until the end he also fought for the honor of the sergeant major at the time, Peter Idel, whom the then MP Joschka Fischer accused of having disclosed details of the investigation "disguised as a lieutenant colonel".

In 1991, at the time working for the Bundeswehr Verification Center in Geilenkirchen , Kluss managed the first CFE on-site inspection in a barracks in the Soviet Union . His last job as Colonel i. G. took him to Tallinn , where he advised the Estonian Defense Minister.

In 1993, Kluss retired after 37 years of service. After leaving the Bundeswehr, he worked for three years as a freelance journalist for Swiss magazines and from 1996 to 1999 director of the Defense and Security Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly . In addition, he was active in the German Society for Foreign Policy and the working group for the military and social sciences .

Kluss was a member of the SPD and became chairman of the SPD district association in the Main-Tauber district in the late 1970s . He ran for the SPD in the European elections in Germany in 1979 and in the federal election in 1980 .

Kluss built the largest ÖTV group within the Bundeswehr . He had two sons with his wife Gisela. Most recently he lived in Wachtberg near Bonn.
