Herbert Nikolaus Lenhof
Herbert Nikolaus Lenhof SAC (born August 20, 1936 in Völklingen-Wehrden ; † October 13, 2017 in Limburg an der Lahn ) was a German religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Queenstown .
Life
He was born on August 20, 1936, the eldest of four children of the Wilhelm Lenhof couple and his wife Elisabeth, née Fernekes, in Wehrden (Saar) , now a part of Völklingen. He attended elementary school and then worked, like his father, in the Völklinger Hütte . Herbert Lenhof was active as an altar boy and boy scout in the St. Josef parish , which was looked after by the Pallottines .
Herbert Lenhof passed the Abitur and joined the order of the Pallottines in the Bischof-Vieter-Kolleg in Limburg and received his training in Olpe and the Philosophical-Theological University of Vallendar . On April 25, 1961, he made his first profession, and on April 25, 1964, he made his perpetual profession in Vallendar. He was ordained a priest on July 18, 1965 by Bishop Carl Schmidt of Trier and initially worked in the Pallottiner Konvikt in Rheinberg , and from 1968 in South Africa . Lenhof was after a short time in the parish pastoral care in Stutterheim and Cathcart from 1970 hospital chaplain at the Glen-Gray-Hospital, from 1978 to 1981 he headed the Pallottine Mission in South Africa as regional superior. In 1981 he became pastor and spiritual director of the Sisters' Congregation of the Mother of Divine Love in Ntaba Maria, which among other things ran a large health center.
Pope John Paul II appointed him third bishop of the South African diocese of Queenstown on February 23, 1984 . On April 28 of the same year he received the episcopal ordination by his predecessor Johannes Baptist Rosner SAC; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Oudtshoorn , Edward Robert Adams , and the Bishop of Umtata , Andrew Zolile T. Brook . His motto was "You should be a witness to me".
In the South African Bishops' Conference he led the working group “Spiritual Professions” and then the working group “Development and Welfare” for 15 years. In this role, he coordinated the help and awareness -raising work on the subject of HIV infection , especially on AIDS orphans.
On November 16, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI. his health-related resignation. Lenhof has been retiring from the Pallottine mother house in Limburg since 2011. He died on Friday, October 13, 2017 in St. Vincenz Hospital Limburg . His funeral took place by Georg Bätzing , Bishop of Limburg, on the Limburg Pallottine cemetery.
