Herbert Trebs (born July 16, 1925 in Halle (Saale) ) is a German Protestant university professor for ecumenism and church history , a former functionary of the GDR CDU and an unofficial employee of the GDR state security .

Life

Trebs studied Protestant theology . From 1951 to 1954 and from 1960 to 1963 he was an aspirant at the Martin Luther University Halle / Saale , 1964–1966 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . With a dissertation on "Ecumenical thinking and the ecumenical idea in Leonhard Ragaz " he became a doctor of theology doctorate . In 1967 Trebs was appointed professor of ecumenism at the Humboldt University in Berlin, which he held until 1990.

In 1950 he signed up as a secret employee for the State Security, and in July 1954 he signed up for the second time as a secret informator .

Trebs worked since 1960 in the so-called "Institut Wandlitz", a conspiratorial object of the state security in Berlin-Pankow for the evaluation and disinformation of church sources, and reported as IM Anton.

Trebs was a member of the GDR CDU from 1947 to 1989 and was the successor to the main board of his party in the late 1950s. From 1954 to 1964 he was department head and editor for cultural and church politics in the editorial office of the Neue Zeit . He was a member of the Peace Council of the GDR and was active in journalism and lectures for the “peace education” of the young generation. He positioned himself against pacifist positions within church circles and accused them of a lack of political responsibility in the systemic conflict between the NATO and the Warsaw Pact states . From 1963 to 1976 he was a member of the People's Chamber . In 1967, as a member of the CDU, he was a member of the commission that worked out a new constitution for the GDR . In 1991 he retired. In 1985 he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

Trebs is married to the visual artist Beatrix Trebs and has three sons and a daughter.

According to Ehrhart Neubert , he belonged to a group of "unrestrained opportunist theologians" who weakened the resistance to the totalitarian violence of the SED regime by participating in the attacks on the young communities . Pastor Michael Pflug, on the other hand, estimates that without Trebs, who protected his students in front of his students, studying would not have been possible without political pressure.
