Hermann Baethcke
Ludwig Hermann Baethcke (born April 19, 1848 in Neuruppin ; † September 12, 1941 in Lübeck ) was a German teacher and member of the Lübeck citizenship .
Life
He was born in Neuruppin as the son of the superintendent Baethcke in Eberswalde , and after attending the grammar school in his hometown studied philology in Leipzig and Berlin . During his studies he became a member of the Leipzig fraternity of Dresden in 1867 and of the fraternity of Germania Berlin in 1868 .
After completing his studies, Baethcke joined the Guard Fusilier Regiment in 1870 as a one-year volunteer , a prospective officer in the reserve , with the rank of NCO and took part in the Franco-German War . In 1875 he was promoted to secondary lieutenant in the reserve and in 1882 to an officer of the Landwehr due to age .
Baethcke received his doctorate in 1873, not knowing that his path would one day lead him to the Hanseatic city , at the Göttingen University as a Dr. phil. with a dissertation on the Lübeck dance of death . After his exams he worked at the secondary school in Frankfurt an der Oder from 1874 and later spent a winter studying in Paris before coming to the Katharineum in Lübeck as a senior teacher at Easter 1878 , where he mainly taught German, Latin and French in the real classes . In 1899 he became a professor and when he retired at the age of 75 on October 1, 1922 , he held the post of senior student councilor .
As a senior philologist in Lübeck , Baethcke could look back on an unusually long activity. Thousands of students at the Katharineum owed him safe knowledge. At the same time, through his own example, as Professor Mantelsack demonstrated in Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks , he educated her to discipline her and to perform the strictest of duties. Despite his old age, he had taken on a large number of substitute hours in the summer of 1922.
As chairman of the Association for School Reform , Baethcke used his rich pedagogical experience to actively participate in efforts to improve teaching methods and reform higher schools. He also campaigned for the founding of the Johanneum . He was a valued advisor to his comrades in all matters of class.
Politically, Baethcke was active as a board member of the Progress Party and then the Liberal Party leadership . From 1881 to 1887 and again from 1895 to 1909 he was a member of the Lübeck citizenship and was considered one of the best experts on finances. He was a member of numerous commissions and authorities , such as from 1899 as a member of the works authority, and was a member of the citizens' committee from 1897 to 1909 .
At the end of 1897, Baethcke was elected together with Wilhelm Christian Cuwie , Wilhelm Brehmer , Theodor Sartori and Ernst Stiller as civil members of the joint commission for the tendering of the imperial monument . Johannes Daniel Benda and Julius Vermehren were appointed as substitutes . You should opt for a massive Uechtritz Kaiser Wilhelm monument . It was only Eduard Kulenkamp , chairman of the Society of Friends of Art , who succeeded in “liberating” the city from this.
Hermann Baethke Foundation
Hermann Baethcke's only son, Ernst Hermann Witekind Baethcke (1885–1909), attended the Katharineum from 1892 to 1904 and then studied. He died as a trainee lawyer in Cassel . In 1913 Baethcke set up the Hermann Baethke Foundation in his memory . The prize, which consists of a cash prize, is awarded annually by a relative of the founder or the foundation board, a teacher of the Katharineum, to a pupil who “has earned the recognition of his / her teachers through the attention and diligent effort . “The award is intended as a grant for a trip.

Trivia
After the death of Senator Mann on October 13, 1891, consul Hermann Wilhelm Fehling and the wine merchant Krafft Tesdorpf were appointed guardians of the five children he left behind.
Thomas Mann was 16 years old at the time. His German and last class teacher ( full professor ) in the lower secondary was Baethcke. In Mann's novel Die Buddenbrooks , for which he would later receive the Nobel Prize , we meet the senior teacher as senior teacher Dr. Coat bag .
