Hermann Simon (Manager)
Hermann Simon (born February 10, 1947 in Hasborn ) is a German management consultant and entrepreneur. Simon is a retired economics professor, author, speaker, and since 1988 a columnist in manager magazin .
Career
Simon grew up on a farm in the Eifel . In 1966 he graduated from the Cusanus-Gymnasium in Wittlich . From 1967 to 1969 he served with Fighter Bomber Wing 33 in Büchel. He is a reserve officer . After studying economics and business administration in Cologne and Bonn from 1969 to 1973, he received his doctorate in 1976. In 1979 he completed his habilitation with Horst Albach in Bonn.
University career
From 1979 to 1989 Simon taught business administration and marketing at Bielefeld University , and from 1989 to 1995 at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . From 1984 to 1986 he was also President of the European Marketing Academy and from 1985 to 1988 Scientific Director of the University Seminar for Economics, now the European School of Management and Technology .
He taught as visiting professor at numerous universities: 1978 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , 1979 at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna , 1983 at the Keiō University in Tokyo, 1984 at Stanford University , at INSEAD in Fontainebleau (1980–1985) the Harvard Business School (1988-1989) and the London Business School (1991-2002).
Simon has published in academic journals such as Management Science and Journal of Marketing Research, as well as more practical journals such as Harvard Business Review and MIT Sloan Management Review . In 1995, Simon ended his academic career.
Company founder
In 1985, Simon founded the consulting company Simon-Kucher & Partners . From 1995 to 2009 he was Chairman of the Management Board . Since 2009 he has been Chairman of Simon-Kucher, and when he reached the age of 70, he became “Honorary Chairman”. He was co-founder of "Helikos", the first special-purpose acquisition company on a German stock exchange.
author
Simon is the author of more than 30 books published in 26 languages. His books on price management have become standard works around the world.
He dealt particularly intensively with medium-sized world market leaders otherwise only known to the specialist world, for whom he coined the term " hidden champions ".
honors and awards
Simon is the recipient of the 2009 Practitioner Prize of the Erich Gutenberg Working Group "for the connection between business theory and business practice". For the work “Price Management” (2010), Simon and Martin Fassnacht received the Georg Bergler Prize for Sales Management . Furthermore, Simon 2012 is the winner of the Business-to-Business-Service-Award of Lünendonk GmbH in the category Lifetime Achievement. The Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration awarded Simon the “Science-oriented Entrepreneur of the Year 2012” prize. In the same year Hermann Simon received the “Mittelstands-Buch 2012” award from the Oskar Patzelt Foundation . In 2013 the French Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques awarded Simon the Prix Zerilli Marimo together with Stéphan Guinchard . A little later, Simon - again together with Stéphan Guinchard - received the second-placed Prix de la Fondation ManpowerGroup pour l'emploi , which the Fondation ManpowerGroup awards together with students from the École des hautes étudeses de Paris .
In 2009 Simon received an honorary doctorate from the Slovenian IEDC-Bled School of Management , where he is a member of the IEDC International Advisory Board and where he lectures regularly.
In 2011 the University of Siegen and in 2012 the Akademia Leona Koźmińskiego in Warsaw awarded him a further honorary doctorate.
Simon has been Honorary President of the Association of German Hidden Champions eV since 2019
