Hermann Konstantin von Gersdorff (born December 2, 1809 in Kieslingswalde , †  September 13,  1870 in Sedan , Ardennes department ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commander of the 22nd division .

Life

Hermann Konstantin was the son of Wolf Ludwig Christian von Gersdorff (1765-1832), district administrator of the Görlitz district, Lord of Kieslingswald, Obererdmannsdorf and Steinbach and his wife Charlotte Friederike Dorothea Auguste, born von Wiedebach (1776-1826).

Military career

After training at the military academy Dresden Gersdorff came on May 16, 1827 as second lieutenant in the 2nd Guards Regiment walk the Prussian army one. He was transferred to the Guard Reserve Infantry Regiment on May 14, 1829, and from October 1, 1832 to July 1, 1833, he was assigned to the General War School. Then Gersdorff was from March 18, 1835 in the Guard Rifle Battalion . He took leave of absence and in 1842/44 he was with the later generals Wilhelm Hiller von Gärtringen (1809–1866) and August Graf von Werder (1808–1888) participants in the Russian campaigns in the Caucasus . Gersdorff took part in the battles on Urup , Oisunger, Serani, Assa and Kalanitsch and was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir IV class with swords for his achievements . After receiving his award, he was accepted as a knight of honor in the Order of St. John and on March 15, 1845, he was granted the patent as a prime lieutenant .

In 1848 he was assigned to organize the Schleswig-Holstein troops in the Schleswig-Holstein War and fought near Schleswig , Hadersleben and Kolding .

In 1853 Gersdorff became a major in the staff of the 16th Division , in 1859 commander of the 4th Jäger Battalion and in 1860 commander of the 67th Infantry Regiment . In 1864 he led the 11th Infantry Brigade as major general in the war against Denmark and in 1866 in the war against Austria . Here he took part in the battles of Münchengrätz and Königgrätz .

Finally, Gersdorff was promoted to commander of the 22nd division on October 30, 1866 and to lieutenant general on December 31, 1866. When Julius von Bose , commanding general of the XI. Army Corps , seriously wounded in the Franco-Prussian War in the Battle of Wörth on August 6, 1870, Gersdorff was given the command of the corps. But he was himself so badly wounded by a shot in the chest at midday of the Battle of Sedan on September 1, 1870, leading the battle for Floing , that he died in Sedan on September 13.

Honors

The infantry barracks in today's Europaviertel in Wiesbaden and the fusilier regiment “von Gersdorff” (Kurhessisches) No. 80 were named after him.

Gersdorff had married Klara Agnes Marianne von Gersdorff (1827–1881), the daughter of Chamberlain Wigand Adolf von Gersdorff, on April 26, 1854 in Rothenburg . The following children were born from the marriage:
