Hesseck
Hesseck is a former municipality in the Odenwaldkreis in southern Hesse . With only 640 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2015) on 29.98 km² , Hesseneck was the smallest independent municipality in Hesse. It was at the border triangle between Hesse and Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg . It was dissolved on January 1, 2018 through the merger to form the new town of Oberzent .
Geographical location
Hesseck had a height of 285 m above sea level. NHN and was the most southeastern municipality in the Odenwaldkreis. It was located in the red sandstone area of the Odenwald on the source streams and the middle course of the Itter , which flows into the Neckar near Eberbach . Between Hesseneck and the core area of the circuit in the Odenwald Mümlingtal the rises Krähberg ( 554.9 m above sea level. NN ) to the pass Reußenkreuz ( 515 m above sea level. NN ). The highest elevation in the municipality was the Hohe Langhaele ( 548.3 m above sea level ) east of the district of Hesselbach on the Baden state border. The lowest point is the confluence of the bark base in the Itter with about 205 m above sea level. NN .
Neighboring communities
Hesseck bordered the cities of Beerfelden and Erbach (both in the Odenwaldkreis) and Markt Kirchzell ( Miltenberg district in Bavaria ) to the north, the municipality of Mudau ( Neckar-Odenwald district in Baden-Württemberg ) to the east, and the city of Eberbach to the south ( Rhein-Neckar-Kreis in Baden-Württemberg) and in the west to the municipality of Sensbachtal (Odenwaldkreis).

history
Territorial reform
In the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse , the previously independent municipalities of Hesselbach, Kailbach and Schöllenbach merged to form the new municipality of Hesseneck on October 1, 1971.
Declining population numbers and economic reasons led to efforts to merge the communities of Hesseneck, Beerfelden , Rothenberg and Sensbachtal into one community with the name Oberzent on January 1, 2018 . In referendums on March 6, 2016, the majority of the citizens of the four municipalities each voted in favor. With a vote participation of 77.4% in Hesseneck, the majority was 88.7% of the citizens voting. The postal code 64754 for Hesseneck became obsolete with the merger.

After the Hessian municipal constitution is Mayor Chairman of the Municipal Board , the volunteer next to the Mayor three in the municipality Hesseneck councilor belonged. The first and last directly elected mayor was Thomas Ihrig (SPD) from 1993 until the dissolution of the community.

The coat of arms of the municipality of Hesseneck was approved by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior on June 8, 1981 . It was designed by the Bad Nauheim heraldist Heinz Ritt . Cross and arch are old place symbols, the stars come from the coat of arms of the county of Erbach. |

Culture and sights
Buildings
- The course of the Limes through the district of Hesselbach with the fort of the same name and watchtower foundations as well as the spring church in Schöllenbach (built in 1465) is worth seeing .
- The Haintal viaduct of the Odenwaldbahn is located near Kailbach . With a length of 173 meters and a height of 30 meters, it consists of nine arches with a span of 15 meters each.

The state road 3108 offered as a winding pass road over the Krähberg the only road connection from Hesseneck to the rest of the Odenwaldkreis . After about nine kilometers in Hetzbach, it reached Bundesstraße 45 ( Hanau - Eberbach ). The Odenwaldbahn had two stops in the municipality , in Kailbach and in Schöllenbach.
Hiking trails
The Nibelungensteig , a 130-kilometer long long- distance hiking trail certified with the seal of approval “Quality Trail Wanderable Germany” , runs through the districts of Schöllenbach and Hesselbach .
