action
The high school student Issei Hyōdo has been trying to find a friend for some time together with two other school friends. However, the three stand out for their careless approach and tension, so that actually no girl at school wants to get involved with them. But one day a student seems to be particularly interested in him and he can hardly believe that she invites him to an appointment so quickly, which he follows without hesitation, blinded by her charm. At the end of the day he is unexpectedly killed by the girl after she turned out to be a fallen angel . To his own amazement, however, he wakes up naked in his bed as if it were just a dream if it weren't for the beauty of the school, Rias Gremory, naked next to him. While she tries to soothe and charm him at the same time and in between his mother stands in astonishment in the doorstep, she explains to him that he was truly killed the previous day, that she resurrected him as a demon as the leader of the demon clan of Gremory and he is now part of the clan.
Rias' group disguises itself as the occult research club ( オ カ ル ト 研究 部 , Okaruto Kenkyūbu ) at the school. Likewise, he must first understand what it means to be a demon and what circumstances and duties result from it. It is only in the club that Issei seems to understand what has happened to him for the first time, and Rias explains to him the hostile relationships between the demons, the fallen angels and the angels, as well as his followers of the church. He also learned that he could have his own servants if he tried hard enough and rose so that his ultimate goal was to become a harem king.
Despite the knowledge of the hostility, he gets to know the young, always friendly and naive nun Asia, with whom he quickly becomes friends despite all hostilities. Due to a plot of the fallen angels, Asia is killed, which Issei cannot prevent, although he gave everything. However, Asia can also be revived as a demon and has since been an integral part of the clan, for whom her healing powers prove to be very helpful. She also became the first of many girls to come who will fall in love with Issei.
In the further course Issei gets stronger and stronger and he plays more and more an important figure for the people within the occult research club and especially for Rias Gremory and the other girls. Although naturally weaker than most of the other - and mostly female - demons, he can still assert himself repeatedly with unusual techniques and his unbroken will. By the way, all the girls in the club gradually fall in love with him, and in particular he developed a deep romantic relationship with Rias. But the other girls don't let it sit down. They also always try their luck with Issei by seducing him, which sometimes puts him in a difficult situation. For his part, Issei still aims to become the most powerful farmer and to rise to the demon nobility so that he can protect Rias again and again and found his harem.
Noble demons take part in a rating game based on chess and used for combat training, and receive 15 chess pieces (
Characters
- Issei Hyōdō ( 兵 藤 一 誠 , Hyōdō Issei )
- Issei is a normal person at first, but falls victim to a trick by the fallen female angel Raynare and later killed by her because he carried a sacred relic that made him a possible danger. Shortly afterwards he was rescued by the demon Rias Gremory, who then accepted him into her clan. He is the main male character and his rank is that of a pawn, which corresponds to the weakest rank. But due to its sacred relic and thus its potential, 8 farmers had to be used for its resurrection and is therefore the only farmer in the group. His dream is to have the rank of king himself so that he can build his own harem. In addition to his perversity, he is characterized by his hot-blooded character and the fact that he is always ready to stand by and protect others at the risk of his life, so that over time several girls fall in love with him, including Rias, Asia, Akeno, Koneko, Xenovia, Irina, Ravel and Rossweisse. Due to his murder by his first love, however, he developed a trauma in which he found it difficult to correctly interpret the affection of the others, and he was also afraid to express his feelings to Rias later in the series. It was only in the 10th volume of the light novel that he overcame this trauma with the help of Asia, Akeno and Koneko and was able to confess his love to Rias, who was very happy about his confession and has officially been with him ever since. His weapon is the Boosted Gear (
赤龍 帝 の 籠 手 , literally: "Gauntlet of the Red Dragon Emperor"), in which the heavenly dragon Ddraig was sealed, which allows him to double his strength every ten seconds. Issei later receives the holy sword Ascalon from the Archangel Michael , which he does not use often himself, but rather gives it to the knight Xenovia, because she can handle the sword better. - It continues to develop over time, with unusual methods being used. His Balance Breaker is called Boosted Gear Scale Mail (
赤龍 帝 の 鎧 (literally: "Armor of the Red Dragon Emperor") and achieved it by stabbing his fingers in Rias' breasts, giving her the nickname Switch Princess . Adjuka Beelzebub, one of the Four Satans, gave him the opportunity to use the Illegal Move Triana , in which he can transform his armor into three different forms that correspond in their abilities to the chess pieces rook, knight and bishop. - His counterpart is Vali Lucifer, who is a member of the Chaos Brigade, a descendant of the original demon ruler Lucifer, and about the Divine Dividing (
白龍皇 の 光 翼 , literally: "Luminous Wings of the White Dragon Emperor"), the direct opposite of Issei's Boost Gear and in which Ddraig's rival Albion was sealed. Though they were direct enemies at first, over time this turned into an honorable rivalry.
- Rias Gremory ( リ ア ス ・ グ レ モ リ ー , Riasu Guremorī )
- Rias, called Benigami no Ruin Princess ( 紅 髪 の
滅殺 姫 , " Carmine " haired princess of destruction), is the main female character. She is very popular in the academy and is considered the most attractive girl in the school, which is why Issei quickly falls in love with her. However, she is not a person, but a demon from the highly respected Gremory family, who traditionally maintain an intimate relationship with their subordinates. She later becomes Issei's master after saving his life. Her rank in the game is that of a king, and she is the president of a secret club for demons, the occult research club, of which Issei is a member after his rebirth. Within the club she is always addressed as Buchō ( 部長 , "club president"). Her brother is Sirzechs Lucifer ( サ ー ゼ ク ス ・ ル シ フ ァ ー , Sāzekusu Rushifā ), called Crimson Satan (紅 髪 の 魔王 , "Crimson Satan"), one of the Four Satans (demon rulers). In the later action, she falls in love with Issei after he saves her from marrying Raiser from the Phoenix clan (see also Phenex ). She was also the second to move into Issei's house and after Akeno and Xenovia moved in, she had this house renovated, which means that it now has six floors and three basement floors. She has officially been a couple with Issei since the 10th volume, after Issei finally managed to express his feelings to her. - Due to Issei's unusual way of getting stronger, in which Ria's breasts played an important role, e.g. B. to activate the Boosted Gear Scale Mail or the Triana , it was given the new nickname Kurimuzon Bust Princess (
紅 髪 の 魔 乳 姫 , "Crimson-haired magical bosom princess") by Azazel , which she doesn't like. - The name Gremory is borrowed from the 56th demon of Ars Goetia , who is portrayed as an attractive woman and can bring love to women.
- Akeno Himejima ( 姫 島 朱 乃 , Himejima Akeno )
- Akeno, called Raikō no Miko ( 雷光 の 巫女 , "temple servant of lightning"), is a demon from the Gremory family with the rank of queen. She is originally the daughter of the Fallen Angel Barakiel, with whom she has a difficult relationship as she blamed him for the death of her human mother when he was not around to protect her. It has the power to fire powerful bolts of lightning, from which it owes its name. Likewise, she still has the power to use light, as the fallen angels do, but at first she always despised this power until later because of Issei she began to accept and use it. As a sign of her origin, she can show her black angel wings in addition to the demon wings. At the academy she is the most popular girl after Rias, and at the occult research club she is vice president. She later falls in love with Issei, where she said that she doesn't mind standing behind Rias and Asia in the harem. She expresses her love for Issei by constantly trying to seduce him and seems to particularly enjoy the idea of betraying Issei's lover Rias more or less secretly. She and Xenovia were the third to move into Issei's house.
- Asia Argento ( ア ー シ ア ・ ア ル ジ ェ ン ト , Āshia Arujento )
- Asia is a nun in the beginning. She befriends Issei through a chance meeting. Because of their sacred relic Twilight Healing (
聖母 の 微笑 , literally: “ Holy Mother's smile ”), which allows her to heal every living being, the fallen angel Reynare wants to kill her and rob her of this strength. Issei and the others try to save her, but they come too late as the holy relic has since been stolen from her. After Issei defeated Reynare in a battle, Rias returned the sacred relic to her and brought her back to life with her bishop as a demon of her clan. When it came to finding a suitable place to live for her, she said that she would like to be with Issei, whereupon she was the first to move into Issei's house. In a later part of the story, she gets a baby dragon as a pet, which she calls Rassei ( ラ ッ セ ー , Rassē ). The fact that she can neither pray to God without pain nor read a Bible because of her transformation into a demon bothers her very much. She often helps Issei with her specialist knowledge about the church and its weapons, as she can, among other things, make consecrated crosses and holy water, which are very dangerous for demons. The other girls see Asia as number two in Issei's harem, especially since she also sleeps in Issei's bed with Rias every night, with Issei mainly seeing her as a kind of little sister at the beginning and largely dismissing her advances as a bad influence from Rias and Akeno. Issei only sees her as a real woman at the end of Volume 6, when Asia kissed him. - In volume 14, with the help of Azazel and Ophis, she will, in addition to Rassei, also make a pact with one of the five dragon kings, with Fafnir . However, unlike Rassei, she has to give him a pair of panties every time she calls him, as he sees them as treasures.
- Koneko Tōjō ( 塔城 小猫 , Tōjō Koneko )
- Koneko is a demon from Rias' clan and has the rank of tower, which gave her extreme strength. She is a nekomata and can therefore make cat ears and a tail appear. She initially lived under her original name Shirone ( 白 音 ) with her sister Kuroka, who was also made into his servant by a demon, but she later killed her master and became a fugitive demon. Koneko himself was protected by Ria's brother Sirzechs Lucifer and brought to her, where she became Ria's servant. Because of this traumatic experience, she was afraid of her own strength and began to show few emotions. Because of her young appearance and her calm nature, she is seen as a school mascot at school. At first she had an aversion to Issei, especially because of his ability to undress girls with magic, but by the end of Volume 5 she experiences a change in her personality and also falls in love with Issei because he helped her to reduce her fear to overcome their powers. She then moved into Issei's house as the fifth and from then on sits on his lap whenever possible. These feelings became so strong that she entered the mating season prematurely, which was reversed by her sister Kuroka.
- Yūto Kiba ( 木 場 祐 斗 , Kiba Yūto )
- He is Rias Gremory's first jumper and was once a test person on a church project to create artificial holy sword users. Yuto was the only survivor of this project and only barely escaped, where he met Rias in the woods and she made him her servant and gave him his current name. He has the sacred relic Sword Birth (
魔 剣 創造 , literally: "demon sword of creation"), which allows him to create demon swords by mere thoughts. From volume 3 he reached the Balance Breaker name Sword of Betrayer (双 覇 の 聖 魔 剣 , literally: "Holy demonic sword of the two hegemons"), which is both a demon sword and a holy sword. He was later revealed to have a second sacred relic, Blade Blacksmith (聖 剣 創造 , literally: "Holy Swords of Creation"), which is the opposite of Sword Birth , since with it he creates holy swords with his thoughts at will. The balance breaker of this relic is again called Glory Drag Trooper (聖 覇 の 竜 騎士 団 , literally: "Order of the Dragon Knights of the Holy Hegemon"). Because of the project, he developed a strong hatred of holy swords, especially Excalibur, and the Church. At school he is especially popular with the girls, which is why Issei hated him at first, but over time they developed a close camaraderie.
- Xenovia ( ゼ ノ ヴ ィ ア , Zenovia )
- She was once a Church soldier who moved to Japan with Irina on their behalf because four fragments of Excalibur were stolen from the Church . She herself was the bearer of the sacred sword Excalibur Destruction and the sword Durendal . She didn't get along with Asia at first and even called her a witch. But when it came out during the fight against Kokabiel that the biblical God was already dead, she turned away from the church and became Ria's second jumper. She returned the sword Excalibur Destruction to the Church, but continued to keep Durendal. She later upgraded Durendal by combining it with the Excalibur swords and it became Ex-Durendal, who now has all the skills of the seven swords.
- She then moved into Issei's house as the fourth, together with Akeno, and quickly told him that she wanted him to have a child, since she assumed that the children would be particularly strong from a connection with him. Because of her life in the church, she is somewhat inexperienced in how to behave in society and therefore lacks some common sense. She also gets along better with Asia and they became good friends.
- Gasper Vladi ( ギ ャ ス パ ー ・ ヴ ラ デ ィ , Gyasupā Vuradi )
- He is a young male Dhampir who was discriminated against by his family, especially by his siblings, because of his origins and who was ultimately chased out of the house. He got into some vampire hunters, where he almost lost his life until he met Rias, who, out of pity, let him resurrect as a demon with the rank of runner. It also has the sacred relic Forbidden Balor View (
停止 世界 の 邪 眼 , literally: "The evil eyes that stop the world"), with which he is able to stop time. However, he couldn't control this power properly, which is why Rias had him sealed in a room until he was old enough to use the power. It wasn't until the fourth volume that he was released after Ria's brother Sirzechs said she had enough power and experience to control him. Because of his low self-esteem, which is why he initially preferred to hide under cardboard boxes, he initially refused, but then developed a trusting relationship with Issei, in which he became more self-confident and courageous over time. He tends to wear girls' clothes because he thinks they are cute, which is why Issei initially thought he was actually a girl.
- Irina Shidō ( 紫藤 イ リ ナ , Shidō Irina )
- She is an old sandpit friend of Issei, who at the time believed she was a boy because of her boyish behavior. At that time she had already cast an eye on Issei, but later she moved with her family to England and became a soldier of the Church, where she had the sacred sword Excalibur Mimic . When she then moved to Japan with Xenovia on behalf of the Church because these four fragments of Excalibur had been stolen, she met Issei again there. At first she wasn't very enthusiastic about Issei becoming a demon and also being perverted, but she still loved him. She is very religious and continues to hold onto God's teachings even after learning that He is dead. She is later reincarnated by the Archangel Michael with the Brave Saints to become an angel with whom her rank is the ace . Since then, like any angel, she has been able to create weapons from light. She only came back in the 6th volume to represent the faction of angels and also moved into Issei's house as the sixth. Instigated by Xenovia, Irina wants, like her, to have children with Issei and to strengthen heaven with them. But unlike the other girls, she has difficulties participating in the harem because she is afraid that she might do something bad and thus become a fallen angel, even though she loves Issei very much.
- Rossweisse ( ロ ス ヴ ァ イ セ , Rosuvaise )
- She is a Valkyrie and the former bodyguard of Odin , who kept teasing her about the fact that she had never had a boyfriend and tried to keep Odin from doing lustful things. So after the fight against Loki and Fenrir , she was left behind by Odin. She has a stingy nature, which is why Issei calls her the "100-yen-Laden-Valkyrie" ( 100 均 ヴ ァ ル キ リ ー , 100-kin Varukirī ), and what Rias exploited to make her her servant with reference to the financial and tax benefits . She received the rank of a tower and has Nordic magic, which she has trained especially for defense since Volume 12. She took on the role of a teacher at Kuoh Academy and then moved into Issei's house as the seventh. However, she was initially not interested in Issei, but in the 12th volume her interest in him began, but only in the 17th volume does she begin to really fall in love with Issei.
- Ravel Phoenix ( レ イ ヴ ェ ル · フ ェ ニ ッ ク ス , Reiveru Fenikkusu )
- She is the little sister of Raiser Phoenix and became his runner. She has been very convinced that no one could beat her brother until Issei beat him in a fight at his engagement party with Rias. She began to admire Issei until she really fell in love with him, although at first she didn't care to be just a concubine as long as she could be around him . Through her mother, she became a "free runner" and was no longer subject to her brother, as she planned to become Issei's runner as soon as he himself achieved the nobility. In the 9th volume, she then moves to the Kuoh Academy, where she attends the first grade together with Gasper and Koneko, and also becomes a member of the Occult Research Club. In the following volume, she moves into Issei's house as the eighth.
- She came in the same class as Koneko and they both developed a rivalry and also often quarreled over Issei's lap, which is an allusion to the enmity between birds and cats. She became Issei's manager from Volume 10 and helped him become a middle-class demon.
- Ophis ( オ ー フ ィ ス , Ōfisu )
- Ophis, also known as the Ouroboros dragon, is one of the two divine dragons that are said to be more powerful than God and represent infinity. She is the founder and former leader of the Chaos Brigade, with whom she initially planned to return to the dimensional gap where she once lived until the other divine dragon called the Great Red occupied it. She then wanted to scare them away with the help of the Chaos Brigade. Ophis herself is actually sexless and at the beginning of the story still had the shape of an old man before she then took the shape of a girl. Then, when Issei reached the "True Queen" form, Ophis began to take some interest in him as Ddraig's color went from his ordinary red to crimson. After a short time, however, she was betrayed by Cao Cao from the hero faction of the Chaos Brigade, and with the help of the cursed dragon Samael, part of her strength was robbed in order to create a new Ophis. In Volume 12, she and Issei are rescued by the Great Red and assisted in building Issei's new body, the previous body of which was destroyed by the curse of Samael. At the end of the tape she joins the Gremory group because Issei is now part of her, much to the annoyance of the other girls, and so she moved into Issei's house as the ninth.

On September 6, 2012, the production of a second season was announced in the limited edition of the 13th volume of novels. This edition also contained a 13th episode on the included Blu-Ray. Volume 15 also contained a Blu-Ray with a 14th episode.
The second season with a further 12 episodes, called High School D × D New , adapted the novel volumes 3 and 4 and ran from July 7th to September 22nd 2013 on AT-X, as well as with up to a week offset on Chiba TV, Tokyo MX, Sun TV, TV Aichi and BS11.
