Home (spelling: "HOME") is a freelance documentary by the French photographer and journalist Yann Arthus-Bertrand . The film consists largely of aerial photographs that were shot with a high-resolution Cineflex digital camera in over 50 countries on all continents of the world. On June 5, 2009, World Environment Day , it was released simultaneously in cinemas, on DVD, on television and on the Internet worldwide. In Paris it was shown on big screens in front of the Eiffel Tower .

The film consists for the most part of aerial shots from different areas of the world - from the tropical rainforest to the arctic sea to big cities like Tokyo , Dubai or Lagos . The off- screen commentary addresses ecological and social problems such as global warming , overpopulation , soil erosion , the exploitation of natural resources, lack of drinking water and species protection . In the final part, some positive developments are shown, such as the increasing use of wind energy and solar energy and the role of personal consumption style.

According to the makers, the intention of the film is to illustrate the biodiversity of the world and the threat to the ecological balance posed by humans. HOME should pay homage to the beauty of nature and at the same time show its vulnerability. This is intended to make clear to the audience the urgency of environmental protection and the idea of ​​shared responsibility for the earth.

Emergence

The film was financed by the French luxury goods group PPR (including Gucci , Fnac , Puma AG ) with 10 million euros. Since the group's logos are displayed at the beginning and end of the film, some critics assume that the group sees the film as part of its public relations work and hopes it will have a positive advertising effect ( greenwashing ). The General Director of PPR, François-Henri Pinault , emphasizes that it is necessary for companies like PPR to stand up for environmental protection and to make people aware of the problem of climate change. The film itself was criticized for showing beautiful nature shots, but not having a clear argumentation and no concrete suggestions for action.

Two days before the 2009 European elections , the public broadcaster France 2 broadcast the film. This was criticized by other parties as an electoral aid for the Greens, which were able to double their result compared to the previous election.

According to the filmmaker Bertrand, Home can be distributed and publicly shown by anyone without the permission of the rights holder.

A contribution to the world premiere of Bertrand's documentary Human in 2015 named the number of 600 million viewers for Home.
