history

According to the Reichenberg chronicler, Dechant Anton Hofmann, Witkow is said to have been founded in 1290 by several peasant sons from Wittgendorf near Zittau . In 1352 it was designated as a parish. The four-kilometer-long village, subject to the rule of Hammerstein and later to the rule of Reichenberg , was divided in 1615. Ober Wittig, as well as Nieder Wittig, received their own local judge. The residents of the parish village of Ober Wittig were of the Evangelical Lutheran faith from around 1535 for over 100 years. In 1575 the dilapidated church was rebuilt by Freiherr von Redern , which was renovated in 1631. The beginning of a school also dates from this time.

In the course of the Counter Reformation , the Protestant pastor had to leave the place. Subsequently, numerous residents left Bohemia as exiles because of their faith . In 1706, Count Gallas's inspector of the Dominions Friedland and Reichenberg, Karl Christian Platz von Ehrenthal (1663–1722) received Wittig as a fief. He had the manor house built next to the church. Ehrental was a feared subject flayer and tyrant during his lifetime. When he died in 1722, this was received with relief. Soon thereafter, the legend arose that Ehrenthal's ghost appeared in his offices at Reichenberg Castle at night and was finally banished to the Hemmrich near Philippsgrund , where he saw stones at night on the border of rule. In the vernacular he is said to have received the obituary: Platz von Ehrental, the torment of humanity - lied to God, cheated the world and sucked the peasants . Philipp Josef Graf Gallas issued a secondary school instruction in 1738 with the educational goals: reading, writing, arithmetic, music, catechism and education for virtue, honesty and polite morals. The girls received instruction in sewing and knitting.

During the Seven Years' War , the Prussians occupied the village for three days, plundering it and ravaging the church. In 1779 Emperor Joseph II came from Friedland to Wittig via Hohenwald and the Gickelsberg. A memorial remembered him. In 1786 Joseph Kaulfersch donated a poor house. In 1828 Anton Hillebrand built a windmill on Hackelsberg north of the village. In 1830 Ober Wittig, including the field sieve, consisted of 106 houses and had 429 inhabitants. At that time there were several spinning and weaving mills in the place. In the middle of the 19th century the place came under the rule of Grafenstein .

After the abolition of patrimonial Ober Wittig formed from 1850 a community in the district administration Reichenberg. During the German War in 1866 the Prussian army crossed the border into northern Bohemia and caused great damage in the village. The connecting road from Olbersdorf to Ober Wittig was built between 1898 and 1899 . In 1930 there were 486 people living in the community. After the Munich Agreement , the village was added to the German Reich in 1938 and belonged to the Reichenberg district until 1945 . In 1939 Ober Wittig only had 440 inhabitants. In 1944 it merged with Nieder Wittig to form a municipality of Wittig .

After the end of the war, the village returned to Czechoslovakia and the German residents mostly came to Zittau as displaced persons . The windmill on the Polish border was demolished. Until 1960 Horní Vítkov belonged as part of the municipality Vítkov to the Okres Liberec-okolí and then to the Okres Liberec . In 1980 it was incorporated into Chrastava . On the Vítkovský Kopec, the construction of the early medieval fortification of Wothansburg began in 1999, which has been named Curia Vitkov since 2007 . In 1991 the place had 104 inhabitants. In 2001 the village consisted of 37 houses in which 112 people lived.
