Horst Lerche

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Horst Lerche (born September 12, 1938 in Hamburg ; † December 3, 2017 in Jüchen ) was a German painter and sculptor .

Life

Horst Lerche was born in Hamburg in 1938. After a bomb attack in 1943, the family moved to the Lüneburg Heath . In Lüneburg , schooling ended with the secondary school leaving certificate, which was already accompanied by intensive artistic practice. In 1956 Horst Lerche applied to the Düsseldorf Art Academy and joined Otto Pankok's class the following year . After his retirement he continued studying with Joseph Fassbender and Ferdinand Macketanz . Helmut Sundhaußen and Blinky Palermo were among his college friends . In the early sixties he belonged to the group of artists who moved into quarters in the Einbrunger Mühle, including Hannes Esser , Günther Uecker , Bernd and Hilla Becher . After Horst Lerche received the Villa Romana Prize in 1967 , he lived with his wife, the textile artist and pedagogue Heidi Lerche-Renn, for a year in Florence , where his daughter Lina was born. He decided early on to be a freelance artist. In the 1990s he took on a teaching position at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.

Applied, predominantly architecture-related works remained an important part of the work alongside painting, which has been presented in numerous exhibitions at important institutes, has been awarded several prizes and has been documented in extensive literature. From 1975 Horst Lerche and his wife lived and worked on their property, the Hamscherhof in Jüchen , which is a popular meeting place for artists and intellectuals . A long-term friendship linked Horst Lerche u. a. with the Düsseldorf painter Sigrid Kopfermann and the graphic artist Helfried Hagenberg . From the early 1980s to 2012, the long and regular stays in Greece left clear traces in the artist's work. Horst Lerche died in Jüchen in 2017 after a long illness.

painting

In the early sixties, Horst Lerche's painting moved close to the subject, but consciously turned away from the paralyzing dictates of the previous decades. Like many artists of his generation, he discovered modernism in connection with expressionist positions, with echoes of Munch's Nordic landscapes being unmistakable. The Villa Romana period in 1967 marked a turning point towards minimalist composition, in which the landscapes gradually lose their expressive character and merge into constructed color spaces. After exploring the possibilities of hard-edge painting, which was current at the time, both on canvas and on variable objects, Horst Lerche discovered - in addition to cloths - wood as the material that made his painting into constitutive elements of the room. His color and space installations (color space Kaiser Wilhelm Museum , Krefeld ) mark a convention-breaking, unmistakable position in West German art. The painting of the eighties and nineties, oscillating between baroque splendor and minimalist severity, unfolds on the surfaces of three-dimensional wooden objects. Explosive color cascades, often forming a landscape again, were increasingly joined by monochrome surfaces in the course of the nineties. The color blue asserts itself as a decisive factor.

Wooden sculptures

Represented in numerous museums and collections, Horst Lerche approached his subject from a new perspective from 1987. In partly monumental wooden constructions (including the Blauer Turm in Heidelberg ), the real landscape itself takes on the role of painting, with the result that the separation of interior and exterior space appears to be abolished. Accompanied by an analytical preparation of the visual material on the picture surface, a number of half-timbered architectures emerge, such as the Blue House 1987, The Blue Tower of Heidelberg 1990, The Blue Tower of Wevelinghoven 1993, The Blue Tower of Moyland Castle 1999. Inspired by the The vastness of the Greek landscape, the analytically defined color space takes on traits of romantic spirituality. When naming works from the last few years, Horst Lerche sometimes moves away from the typical specific picture titles and chooses metaphorical formulations such as Time and Work 2003, Dark Waters 2008 or Past Time 2011.

Architecture related work

In addition to works of pure painting, over fifty applied, architecture-related works and the like were created between 1975 and 2014. a. in cooperation with the architects Karlhans Pfleiderer and Heinz Döhmen and several color concepts for the organ building company Martin Scholz.
