Thomas Andrew "Tom" Huddlestone (born December 28, 1986 in Nottingham ) is an English football player who has been under contract with the second division Derby County since 2017 . He mostly plays in central midfield or occasionally in the central defensive position .

Athletic career

At the age of 16 Huddlestone made his debut in the English second division on the first day of the 2003/04 season. In the 3-0 defeat of his club Derby County against Stoke City , the debut was overall unsuccessful, but the performance of the young professional was rewarded with the award as the best player ("Man of the Match"). The fact that such a young player could look back on 1½ years as a regular player in the second-rate Football League Championship on his 18th birthday did not go unnoticed by the larger clubs in the Premier League and so Tottenham Hotspur secured a transfer fee of (media reports according to) three million pounds of Huddlestones services from the summer of 2005. In the old year 2005, however, he stayed with the "Spurs" without any use of his own; instead he played a total of 13 championship games for the second division Wolverhampton Wanderers between October 2005 and January 2006 - there he also scored his first goal on November 18, 2005, against his former club Derby County. After his return he also made his debut in Tottenham, but lost as a substitute against city rivals Fulham 0-1.

On September 14, 2006, Huddlestone played his first game for Spurs in the UEFA Cup against Slavia Prague (1-0) and just under two months later he scored the first goal in the League Cup against Port Vale , with his second goal the decision in the game. Towards the end of the 2006/07 season he established himself more and more in the central midfield and was considered one of the most promising English talents - former coach Martin Jol compared the playmaking skills, shooting technique and versatility with those of Michael Carrick and Franz Beckenbauer . This also included the occasional games in the central defensive position both at Tottenham and for the England U-21 national team .

On December 25, 2006, he signed a new contract in London for 4½ years, which he renewed 1½ years later until the end of the 2012/13 season. In 2008 he won his first major title with the League Cup - in the final, which was won 2-1 after extra time against Chelsea , he was substituted on for Pascal Chimbonda after around an hour .

For the 2013/14 season Huddlestone moved to Hull City . He signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2016.

On July 15, 2017, the second division Derby County announced the commitment of Huddlestone.

English national team

Huddlestone had already played for the English U-17 and U-19 selection before becoming a regular in the U-21 national team. There he was also in the squad for the 2007 European Championship in the Netherlands and played two games there; however, a red card caused his tournament to end prematurely. In October 2008 he scored a free-kick goal in the elimination second leg against Wales and the team qualified for the Euro 2009 in Sweden with the 2-2 final result . In contrast, however, Huddlestones was sent off again after a gross foul against Darcy Blake and Huddlestone also missed the tournament itself due to a knee injury.

After he had already been nominated by Fabio Capello for the games against the USA and Trinidad and Tobago , Huddlestone completed his first international match for the English senior team on November 14, 2009 in the 0-1 defeat against Brazil with a short ten-minute assignment .
