International Geographical Union

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Geographical Union ( English International Geographical Union ; French Union geographique internationale ), IGU for short , is an international scientific organization for the promotion of geographic research and the global umbrella organization for the national geographic societies involved. She is a member of the International Science Council (ICSU) and the International Council for Social Sciences (ISSC).

history

International geographical congresses have been held regularly since 1871, the IGU itself was founded in Brussels in 1922 and became a member of the predecessor organization of the International Science Council the following year. The IGU's first regional conference took place in 1955. From 1964 there was close cooperation with the International Cartographic Association . Their announcements appeared in the IGU's publication organ, the IGU Bulletin , and the scientific congresses of both associations were held at the same place. At the beginning of the 1980s, the collaboration on these aspects was resolved again. The organization's archive was initially located in London, and from 2002 in the Villa Celimontana in Rome. It can now be found at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography in Leipzig .

Areas of responsibility

The self-declared objectives of the IGU are:

  1. to encourage the study of geographic problems;
  2. To initiate and coordinate geographic research that requires international cooperation, as well as to promote the scientific discussion of the same and its publication;
  3. ensure the participation of geographers in the work of key international organizations;
  4. facilitate the collection and dissemination of geographical data and records within and between member countries;
  5. to promote international geography congresses as well as regional conferences and specialist symposia that are related to the aims of the IGU;
  6. to participate in any other suitable form of international cooperation which aims to advance the exploration and application of geography;
  7. to promote the international standardization or compatibility of methods, designations and symbols used in geography.

structure

The central body of the IGU is the general assembly, consisting of the delegates of the member countries, which meets every four years on the occasion of the international geographic congresses. Those of the approximately 100 member countries whose committees are formed by scientific societies are full members and have the right to vote for the offices of the IGU countries in which there is no suitable scientific society Affairs.

The Executive Committee consists of the President, the Secretary General and Treasurer and nine Vice-Presidents (eight elected as such, including the direct deputy of the President and the President of the previous legislative term). They are each elected for four years, whereby the president cannot be re-elected, the general secretary and the vice-presidents each once.

Individual subject areas are worked out in smaller working groups, especially in the commissions, which each cover specific subject areas. For the coordination of special international projects such as the International Geography Olympiad , the task force has also been in existence since 1998 .
