I Am Not Okay With This is an American television series that premiered on February 26, 2020 on the video-on-demand provider Netflix . It is based on the graphic novel of the same name by the American illustrator Charles Forsman , who also wrote the template for the Netflix production The End of the F *** ing World . It is produced by Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen , among others , who also financed the thematically similar Netflix series Stranger Things . I Am Not Okay With This is about the 17-year-old student Sydney Novak, who after the death of her father discovers that she has telekinetic powers that are activated whenever her negative emotions get out of hand. This becomes a problem for her because, in addition to constant differences with her mother, she also has to struggle with her feelings for her best friend and school problems.

On August 21, 2020, Netflix announced that I Am Not Okay With This would not be renewed for a second season due to uncertainties about production conditions and unexpected budget increases due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

action

The father of 17-year-old Sydney Novak hanged himself in the basement of his house . A year has passed since then, his daughter is still mourning him, while his wife Maggie does not want to talk to Sydney about his motives, which results in constant, sometimes violent conflicts between the two. Sydney also has a younger brother named Liam, who often gets on her nerves and with whom she often argues, but they like each other, she also looks after him because her mother works in the diner has no time for it, and protect him from his bully as best you can.

At school, Sydney is in love with her best friend Dina, which she didn't realize at first. But this leads a relationship with the jock Bradley Lewis, who is not a pleasant person and does not like Sydney, which is completely mutual. One day when they are sitting together in a diner and Brad's nose starts bleeding after making fun of Sydney, she realizes that something seems to be wrong with her. When other events occur in her presence, such as sudden cracks in the wall of her room or overturning street signs, Sydney realizes that she has telekinetic powers. These occur whenever Sydney experiences negative emotions or has panic attacks. From then on, Sydney has to learn to suppress these feelings and thus also their destructive powers, which is not easy in view of her tense family situation and conflicts at school.

In contrast to her, Sydney's neighbor Stanley Barber is delighted with her powers as he is a geek and a huge fan of comics, especially the X-Men . He thinks he's sort of a Charles Xavier , a mentor , to Sydney. Despite his difficult circumstances at home (his mother has left the family, his father is an alcoholic and hardly at home), Stanley is always cheerful and friendly. He also starts a relationship with Sydney, but according to her own statement she only gets involved with him because she wants to keep up with Dina, who already has a boyfriend.

The series features photos of Alex Lawther and Jessica Barden . These are supposed to represent their characters James and Alyssa from the series The End of the F *** ing World , which is supposed to play at the same time as I Am Not Okay With This . Thus, both productions are part of a common series universe , but are only intended as an Easter egg .

In the present, Sydney is frustrated because Maggie doesn't want to talk about the circumstances of her death, which is why the two often quarrel. The trust teacher at her school recommends Sydney to keep a diary in order to deal with anger, which she reluctantly agrees to. After that, Sydney has a diner with her best friend Dina, who has recently started dating the jock Bradley Lewis, known as Brad, whom Sydney can't stand. When he suddenly has a nosebleed after mocking Sydney to smile, she can't shake the feeling that she is responsible. On her way home, she meets her neighbor Stanley Barber, who suggests they spend time together, something Sydney reluctantly gets involved in. At home, Sydney takes care of Liam, who tells her about a boy who is in trouble for beating someone. That same evening, Sydney retreats to the floor of her room after a violent argument with her mother when the wall behind her suddenly cracks.

The next morning, Sydney convinces herself that the cracks were caused by the old age of the house. Maggie asks Sydney to go shopping after school, so Sydney asks Dina if she can drive her to the store later. She replies that she will go to the school meeting and the football game that follows instead . Resigned, Sydney runs to the supermarket and throws stones. To her horror, she hits a street sign, which then falls over. Shortly afterwards she meets Stanley and lets him take her to the store. There she finds out that she doesn't have enough money with her and has to put some items aside. When she gets angry and tries to calm down, a lot of groceries fall off the shelves, which is why she flees the store. Stanley thinks she is having a panic attack , so he talks to her outside. They then go to the football game and later kiss at Stanley's house.
3 The party is over The Party's Over Jonathan Entwistle Liz Elverenli
Sydney confides in Dina and tells her that she slept with Stanley the night before, but lies and claims she found it beautiful. Then she picks up Liam from school, on the way home they meet Richard, who harasses Liam. Sydney confronts him, but she fails to use her powers against him, which is why she only gives him an unimpressive warning to leave her brother alone. At home she goes into the basement to look for puzzles for Liam. Since she hasn't been there since her father's death because he hanged himself in the basement, Sydney falls into mourning, which is why she has a panic attack. The house trembles and Liam's pet, his hedgehog Banana, suddenly dies. On the same evening, Sydney is happy to finally be able to spend time alone with Dina at a party, but this is destroyed by Brad. Stanley asks Sydney if she would like to go to homecoming with him , she accepts, although she is not really comfortable with it. A little later she finds a crying Dina in a room who has had an argument with Brad. Sydney comforts her and then kisses her. Dina reacts unsettled while Sydney runs into a nearby forest. There she screams, which causes the trees around her to fall to the ground.
4th Stan by my side Stan by Me Jonathan Entwistle Tripper Clancy
Sydney notices that Stanley followed her into the woods and saw everything. She implores him to keep quiet about the incident and then leaves. The following day, Maggie asks Sydney to take care of Liam again, which leads to an argument, while Maggie tells her daughter that her father was not who she thought he was. At school, Sydney realizes that she is getting angry again, which is why she runs out of the classroom, but she can prevent the activation of her powers by pleasant memories of her childhood. Dina follows her and asks her if everything is okay and they should talk about their kiss, but Sydney doesn't want to and says that she is fine. In the afternoon, Sydney goes to a bowling center where she meets Stanley. He offers her his help, because he is a big comic fan and wants to help her understand her powers. She admits that the trees fell after kissing someone and concludes that her powers are triggered by her stress-related or negative emotions. To test this, Stanley tries to infuriate her, almost getting hit by bowling balls. Sydney leaves irritably, and is pursued by a stranger.
5 Another day in paradise Another day in paradise Jonathan Entwistle Tripper Clancy
During a test, Brad copies Dina, which is why they are sent to detention by their teacher Mr. File , when Sydney protests against this and is supported by Stanley, the two also have to detain. During detention, next to the four of them, there is also their classmate Jenny. Instead of the task of cleaning up the stands on the sports field, this suggests playing the game Fuck, Marry, Kill , in which you have to say with whom of the available people you are having sex, which you are going to marry and which you are would kill. Sydney runs away furiously when Jenny claims that no one wants to have sex with her and that she is a slut. In the library, she knocks over all the bookshelves with her strength and then asks Stanley for help because her secret threatens to be exposed. They claim to Dina that they had sex in the library, which is why she agrees to break into the office with them and steal the footage from the surveillance camera, which they succeed in doing. Some time later, in a locker room, Sydney learns that Jenny and Brad have had sex. When Dina arrives, Sydney reveals this to her despite Brad's urgent requests, which is why Dina breaks up with him. Then Sydney tells Stanley that the lights were flickering in the library and she felt she wasn't alone there.

Later Dina wants to know from Sydney what is really on the recordings, but Sydney refuses to tell her. Meanwhile, Liam at his school finds the courage to speak to his crush Veronica when Richard slaps him in the face. At Sydney's school, Brad's boyfriend Ricky Berry tells him there are rumors about him while Stanley asks Sydney about the homecoming. She replies that she doesn't care about homecoming, which is why he asks another student. Then she goes to her trust teacher and tells her about the stranger the teacher claims that these are hallucinations of Sydney's father. At home, Liam, who now has a black eye , accuses his sister of not being there for him and of behaving terribly recently. Wanting more answers about her father, Sydney searches his old things in the basement, her mother comes in and tells her that he was concerned about something that was made worse by his military service PTSD . When Sydney mentions not going to homecoming with Stanley afterwards, Dina suggests that she go with her, as she doesn't have a date either. Brad mentions to Ricky that the homecoming will be overwhelming. At the dance, Stanley admits to Sydney that he has feelings for her, but she tells him to only see him as a friend, which he eventually accepts. “So it's not surprising that I Am Not Okay With This seems like a mixture of the two series in many places: not quite as wacky as Stranger Things , not quite as melancholy as The End of the F *** ing World . Maybe it's also because I Am Not Okay With This is not believed to be such a big hit with audiences. However, the creators have succeeded in creating a main character who is completely different from most of the female teenagers who are otherwise shown on screens. Syd isn't interested in dresses, prom, or cooking. She is amiable, but not kind, not nice, but angry, introverted, cheeky and cranky - embodied by the 16 (sic!) Year old actress Sophia Lillis. Syd shouldn't impersonate a guy, but a single young woman, says producer Sawn (sic!) Levy. That, you have to give the series so much, has succeeded. It's always fun to follow Syd and her friends (and enemies). Especially after the worst thing that can happen to a teenager happens to Syd: her diary is stolen. Because there is only one thing more dangerous than a teenage boy through puberty: a teenage boy with superpowers. And there is only one thing that is more dangerous than a teenage boy with superpowers: a teenage boy with superpowers whose diary is stolen. "

- Eugen Epp : Stern

Axel Weidemann wrote in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the series lured viewers into their world. This can be seen, among other things, in the sequence in which Sydney stands at the grave of her brother's pet hedgehog, whom she accidentally killed with her powers, and has to say a few words, because in this scene a strange "So-plays -feeling-life-gravity “. Weidemann also praised the three main actors: Aidan Wojtak-Hissong portrayed Liam as a “ serene child philosopher”, Sophia Lillis succeeded in expressing feelings without “blowing up” her role. In her look, which resembles a “drowned Gothic Metal band”, “bittersweet, but deadly serious teenage despair” can be recognized. Wyatt Oleff played Stanley "gorgeous eccentric", his performance gently hinted that the "protective whimsy" of his character with "simultaneous fragility" also had something to do with his "completely alienated drinking father". Weidemann closed his criticism with the words that the production, which is a more mature version of Stranger Things, is “charged with gentle nostalgia” thanks to a “touch of Wes Anderson ”, without clinging to clichés or using brand names.

Petrana Radulovic of polygon noted that as in the Netflix productions Stranger Things and The Umbrella Academy in I Am Not Okay With This a young woman with supernatural powers Soul of the party. However, the series stands out because in it the main character, unlike the other two, does not save the world. As in Sex Education , the comical moments arise from the mixing of superpowers with typical coming-of-age plot elements, the weaker scenes are those in which the production focuses too much on the supernatural moments. Due to the comparatively small number of characters, the series producers manage to explore the full depth of Sydney's relationships and the emotions associated with them such as love, jealousy and total devotion. In addition, due to the short length of the episodes, the storylines and character development remained concise. The production doesn't waste any time, as every dialogue drives the superpowered plot and every superpowered scene becomes an exploration of Sydney's character. In addition, the series is about teenagers instead of an all-encompassing archenemy, but it avoids the pitfalls of "worn-out children-with-strength dramas". The supernatural element is an obvious, effective metaphor for Sydney's burdens that she cannot talk about and the emotions she is piling up. Like these metaphors, the characters, who could quickly fall into stereotypical behavior, are lively and dimensional. Geek Stanley and irritable Sydney are not the standard " nerd- get-the-distant-girl" relationship because they don't become a couple and Stanley still cares about her and wants her to be happy, which is why this storyline is one of the most emotionally fulfilling of the series. All these subversions ended with the end of the first season. The little story of a young woman who finds her place in the world becomes louder and bigger and therefore more clichéd. I Am Not Okay With This feels special most of the time, like a character-based exception to great supernatural stories. Only in the end try desperately to be like everything else.

Lucy Mangan rated the series three out of five stars in The Guardian . According to her, the real joys of the series are not the increasing dynamics or dangers in the plot, but the game of Sophia Lillis. She is wonderful at expressing the depths and lightheadedness after loss that lie beneath layers of "ordinary youthful anger and frustration" that lie beneath the "traditional pose of sardonic dissatisfaction." The viewer wants to slap, defend, comfort and be you at the same time. The central idea of using superpowers as a metaphor for changing bodies and encroaching adult life with all its twists and turns has been around abundantly in relation to young women since Carrie , whose DNA is in the main character alongside that of Buffy Summers and Eleven from Stranger Things be embedded. However, the series would have its own charm, style and self-confidence, which came from the other "strand of its double helix". Sydney is a descendant of some of the “slippery outsiders”. It contained "snippets" of Daria , Lindsey (in whose group Stanley would fit in well), Janis , Angela Chase and an "occasional touch" of Heathers . Mangan concluded her review by saying that there should be a series about a woman in her forties who uses the "power of perimenopause " to transform all of her repressed anger into a force that destroys "idiotic people, institutions and everything in between." recreated according to their ideas. Until then, however, the story of Sydney, which is recreating its world and dealing with itself, its friends, its sexuality and the pimples on its thighs, is satisfactorily sufficient.
