The Iberg, with its summit location near Hörle in the Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg and north-eastern parts of the mountain near Welda in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Höxter, is 285.5  m above sea level. NHN high elevation of the Ostwaldecker peripheral depressions .

Origin of name

The name Iberg can be derived from the Old High German (ahd.) Word iwa or from the Middle High German (mhd.) Word iweyew . The soil on the elevation is good for their growth. The name Iberg is used in Welda to denote the shooting range and a new building area there.

geography

location

The Iberg rises on the border of Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia in the Eichholz ridge - in the south-eastern part of the Quast and Eichholz natural area. While its summit is almost 200 m south-southwest of the state border in the north of the north Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg 1.4 km east of the Volkmarsen district of Hörle and 1.8 km (as the crow flies ) southwest of the Warburg district of Welda , the north-eastern mountain parts are in the south of the Westphalian district of Höxter. Parts of the southern foothills of the Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge nature park lie on the Westphalian mountain flank . The southern foothills of the Iberg is called Kleiner Iberg ( 257.7  m ), which lies south of the “actual” Iberg or is upstream as seen from the south-southeastern Volkmarsen.

To the south, the landscape of the Iberg slopes down to the wall , which flows eastwards and flows into the Twiste, which comes east of the elevation from the direction of Volkmarsen in the south and runs to Warburg (north) , and to the west and north to the Hörler Bach , which runs from Hörle approximately to Runs east to Welda and flows into the Twiste.

Natural allocation

The Iberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group West Hessisches Bergland (No. 34), in the main unit Ostwaldecker Randsenken (341) and in the subunit Rhoder Senken (341.1) to the natural area Quast and Eichholz (341.13). Its landscape falls to the south and west into the subunit Volkmarser Basin (341.2) and to the east and northeast into the natural area Volkmarser Graben (341.14).

Geology and climate

The Volkmarser Lias Graben, which has little iron deposits, runs east past the Iberg . The lying on Iberg part of Ostwald Ecker edge lower, mostly Mesozoic up with various ditches, faults and ridges, is as eggisch (this term is based on the somewhat more northerly Eggegebirge ), respectively. Its valley range is climatically dry, with precipitation values a maximum of about 600 to 650 mm per year.

history

From the Middle Ages until 1803, the three-country border ran on the Iberg (hereinafter referred to as the localities near the Iberg) between the Paderborn Monastery (Welda), the Principality of Waldeck (Hörle) and the Duchy of Westphalia (Volkmarsen). The territorial affiliation of Volkmarsen changed several times; it was at times Kurhessisch. Since the Principality of Waldeck was absorbed into the German state of Hesse, part of the Hesse-Westphalia state border has run across the Iberg.

Protected areas

On the south-western slope of the Iberg, on the Hessian side, lies the Iberg nature reserve (NSG) near Hörle ( CDDA no. 163844; designated 1970; 29  hectares in size). The NSG Iberg near Welda (HX-004; CDDA No. 344691; 1944; 95.6 ha) is located on its northeast slope on the Westphalian side . The fauna-flora-habitat area Iberg near Welda (FFH no. 4520-302; 25 ha) is located in the east of the last-mentioned NSG . East it includes the conservation area Southern Höxter (.; 1982; CDDA No. 324936 229.34  square kilometers ) on.

Flora

The plants worth protecting on the Iberg are liverworts, eared St. John's wort, greenish forest hyacinths, white forest birds and sage. On parts of the mostly forested elevation there are limestone grasslands . Around the Iberg and on parts of its northeast flank up to the high elevations there are agricultural areas.

Geopark Grenzwelten

The Nordwaldeck region of the 3710 km² Grenzwelten Geopark , located in Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia, extends on the Iberg , in which visitors can see the history of the earth, the formation of the landscape, geology and land use. This is done through information boards, leaflets and guided hikes.

Traffic and walking

About three km north-northeast of the Iberg summit on the Weldaer Berg ( 230.6  m ) is the Warburg junction (No. 60) of the federal motorway 44 . There, federal highway 252 , which runs under the autobahn, turns into state highway  837, a few hundred meters long . This in turn meets the L 552, which leads from Volkmarsen downstream along the Twiste and east past the Iberg to Warburg . From this, in turn, the county road  552 branches off at Welda , which runs north and east past the mountain towards west-south-west along the Hörler Bach slightly upwards to Hörle (there: called the Hüpper ). For example, starting at these roads, the Iberg can be hiked on mostly forest paths and paths.
