Career

Ilaria Sommavilla achieved her first major successes at national level at the Italian championships in Forni di Sopra in 2002 with victories in the Super-G and in the combination. By 2011, another 15 Italian championship titles were added, which means that she now holds 17 titles. She won her first medals in international competitions in 2003 at the Junior World Championships in Goldingen . In the slalom she came second and with fifth place in the Super-G she also took silver in the combined. In the giant slalom, she finished fourth. In the same year she also took part in the World Championships in Castione della Presolana and was among the top ten in all competitions. Her best result was fourth place in the combination.

In the 2004 season, Sommavilla drove on the podium for the first time in World Cup races . In the two slaloms of L'Aquila as well as in the combinations of Forni di Sopra and Nové Město na Moravě , she drove to second place, which she finished third in the overall standings. At the Junior World Championships in 2004 she won silver in slalom and bronze in each of the giant slalom and combined, in the Super-G she was fourth. In the 2005 World Cup season , the Italian achieved four podiums in the Forni di Sopra races. She came second in the giant slalom and the second Super-G as well as third in the first Super-G and in the combination, with which she came second in the overall classification behind the Austrian Ingrid Hirschhofer . At the 2005 World Championships she was fourth in slalom, fifth in combination and eleventh in super-G. At the Junior World Championships in 2005 , she won the silver medal in giant slalom and in all other competitions she was among the top five.

Ilaria Sommavilla achieved two podium places in the giant slaloms in České Petrovice and Forni di Sopra in the 2006 World Cup season . With a further three top 5 results, she finished fifth overall. At the Junior World Championships 2006 in the Czech Horní Lhota u Ostravy , she drove into the medal ranks in all competitions and she also won her first title. In the Super-G she was third, in slalom and in the combination she came second behind the Swiss Nadja Vogel and in the giant slalom she was Junior World Champion ahead of Vogel and the Czech Petra Mlejnková . In the 2007 World Cup season, Sommavilla finished in the top three six times, but still failed to win. In the overall standings, like two years ago, she finished second behind Ingrid Hirschhofer. At the Junior World Championship in 2007 the Italian was able to successfully defend her giant slalom title. In the slalom and in the super combined she was second and in the super-G she finished fourth, just a hundredth of a second behind third placed Petra Mlejnková. She achieved two fourth places in slalom and giant slalom and two sixth places in super-G and super-combined at the 2007 World Championships in Olešnice v Orlických horách .

Two third places in the slalom and the giant slalom in Čenkovice were Sommavilla's best results in the 2008 World Cup season . In four other races she was among the top five, which put her in fourth place overall. She remained without a top result in the 2009 World Cup season . She only reached the finish line in two races (sixth place in the super combination of Forni di Sopra and ninth place in the super combination of Wilhelmsburg ) and thus fell back to twelfth place in the overall classification. Nevertheless, she was able to celebrate her greatest success so far this year. At the 2009 World Championships in Rettenbach , she was more than one and a half seconds ahead of the Slovakian Veronika Cvašková world champion in slalom. She finished the giant slalom in sixth place. The 2010 World Cup season began for Ilaria Sommavilla with a failure in the giant slalom in Čenkovice at the beginning of July. Then she only took part again in the World Cup slalom in Faistenau , where she reached second place. After three top 10 results in Cesana San Sicario and Frais-Chiomonte , she celebrated her first World Cup victory on September 19, 2010 in the final slalom in Sestriere , after having been second ten times and third nine times. In the overall World Cup, she achieved seventh place.

Sommavilla celebrated the second World Cup victory at the end of the 2011 season in the super combination of Forni di Sopra. She had already been on the podium twice this year. In the overall World Cup she was able to improve again to fourth place. At the 2011 World Championships in Goldingen , she won the bronze medal in the giant slalom and was fifth in the slalom. In the super-G and in the super combination, she did not finish. For Sommavillas, the 2012 World Cup season was the most successful so far: It started the season with two victories in the sprint slalom in Trieste and celebrated another victory in the slalom of the World Cup final in Rettenbach. In addition, she came second three times and third twice, which means she won the overall World Cup ahead of the 15-year-old World Cup debutante Kristin Hetfleisch .

From 2002 to 2008 Ilaria Sommavilla also took part in numerous FIS and national junior races in alpine skiing . While she was on the podium three times in the junior races, she was only once in the top 30 in FIS races.
