from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ingo 'Mr. Smile 'Schwichtenberg (born May 18, 1965 in Hamburg ; † March 8, 1995 there ) was the drummer of the power metal band Helloween .

Career before Helloween

Ingo Schwichtenberg was born in Hamburg in 1965 and grew up in a row house in the neighborhood of Kai Hansen . He has an older brother and a younger sister, the father was a firefighter. Schwichtenberg learned the recorder as a child. After his mother died of an illness in 1981, he lived with his father in the parents' house for a long time.

Schwichtenberg originally played the clarinet in the school orchestra before he started playing drums in 1980 at the age of 15. In the same year he met Kai Hansen in his neighborhood, who invited him to join his band Gentry , to which Markus Grosskopf also belonged. Then the band called themselves Second Hell .

In 1982 the band was renamed Iron Fist and Michael Weikath joined them. After graduating from school, Schwichtenberg did an apprenticeship as an office clerk. He took a few jobs in order to be able to buy a professional Yamaha drum kit and moved into an apartment in Hamburg-Dulsberg with his girlfriend at the time .

Both the band name and the idea that the band should replace the a with an e in the word Halloween should come from Schwichtenberg.

Helloween

In 1984 the band renamed itself Helloween and first released an EP of the same name . In the same year the band released their debut album Walls of Jericho . After the debut album, Hansen concentrated on the guitar and the band's new front man was singer Michael Kiske .

In 1987 and 1988, respectively, the band released the albums Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1 and Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2 , which led to the band's final breakthrough. After these albums, Kai Hansen left Helloween to devote himself to his own projects. He was replaced by Roland Grapow .

At the beginning of the 1990s a turbulent time began for Helloween: The band switched to EMI and then had to deal with a lawsuit from their ex-record company Noise Records . In 1991 the album Pink Bubbles Go Ape was released , which could not be followed by the two previous albums and could only be imported into Germany. During this time Ingo Schwichtenberg began to consume large amounts of cocaine , alcohol and marijuana . He also suffered from psychosis ( schizophrenia ). He was also dissatisfied with the course the band had taken.

After the problems in the band increased, Schwichtenberg was fired after the tour to the album Chameleon and replaced by Uli Kusch .

death

After his end at Helloween, Schwichtenberg's psychological problems and addiction problems increased. On March 8, 1995, Ingo Schwichtenberg committed suicide by throwing himself in front of an S-Bahn near Friedrichsberg train station in Hamburg-Dulsberg . His father had died a month earlier.

The band Helloween dedicated the 1996 album The Time of the Oath to Schwichtenberg . According to ex-Helloween guitarist Roland Grapow , the song Step Out Of Hell on the album Chameleon dealt with Schwichtenberg's problems and escapades.

He was buried in the Volksdorf cemetery in his hometown of Hamburg .

On the 25th anniversary of Schwichtenberg's death, the family published a website and a YouTube channel with personal memories of Ingo Schwichtenberg.
