Chameleon is the fifth studio album by the band Helloween . It was released by EMI in 1993 .

Music genre

Helloween's fifth studio album Chameleon leads the band, which had already wavered with their predecessor Pink Bubbles Go Ape , almost to the end of their career: The song material has nothing to do with Power Metal or Speed Metal , the styles that shaped Helloween and for which the band is known was to do. In addition to some progressive rock elements, there are also influences from pop music and many other directions such as classical, swing , country and gothic rock . In addition, there are instruments atypical for Helloween such as synthesizers , acoustic guitars , church organs and violins. The classical musicians Stefan Pintev and Axel Bergstedt helped Helloween with these innovations. In addition, the children's choir of the Hamburg Bach Orchestra took part in the recordings for the album.

meaning

The music clearly shows the internal disruption and disorientation of the group. The album was almost exclusively by fans and critics panned and is commonly referred to as the worst Helloween album. The tension among the band members culminated in Ingo Schwichtenberg's having to leave the band before the 1993 tour. The reason, besides his drug use, was the fact that he suffered from schizophrenia . Richie Abdel Nabi was hired as session drummer. The joy of playing and the strong audience involvement from previous tours have given way, a fact that was intensified by Michael Kiskes' laryngitis during the European dates. After the tour he quits, too, and EMI releases the band from their contract. With the new singer Andi Deris and drummer Uli Kusch , the band is daring a new musical beginning.
