history

The name of the city comes from the phrase I raga , which is used in Bikolano and means here is country . The first known settlement in the municipality was on the bank of the Bicol River and was called Bua (Nabua) . In 1573 the conquistator Juan de Salcedo conquered the region around Iriga with 120 men. After the conquest, the governor Francisco de Sande ordered the captain Juan de Guzman to visit the region and gave him the task of supporting the Christianization of the region, bringing Franciscans to the region and building churches. In 1578 the first wooden church in the I-raga settlement was built, and five years later the first stone church.

In 1682 I-raga already had a population of 8,909 people and was converted into the administrative unit of Pueblo de la Provincia de Ambos Camarines . In 1710 the first districts ( Barrio ) were established, these were San Agustin, San Isidro, San Nicolas and San Antonio Abad.

In 1901 the first school, the Iriga Central School, opened in Iriga and in 1913 the town was connected to the railway network. In 1948 the first college, the Mabini Memorial College, opened. On July 8, 1968, Iriga was awarded the title of Component City.
