Official in the Israeli administration

Jitzchak Herzog (2014)

Herzog already worked in the government of Ehud Barak (1999-2001) as cabinet secretary. From 2000 to 2003 he headed the Israeli anti-drug agency.

Member of the Knesset and the Israeli government

In the Israeli parliamentary elections in 2003 , he won a seat in the Knesset for the Labor Party (Avoda). He launched several legislative initiatives. When the Labor Party entered the coalition with Ariel Sharon's Likud in 2005 , Duke became Minister for Housing and Construction . However, he resigned at the end of November when the Labor Party left the coalition. In the parliamentary elections in 2006 , Herzog won another mandate and was initially tourism minister under Ehud Olmert , but in 2007, after Jisra'el Beitenu entered the government, he moved to the head of the Ministry of Social Affairs and was also minister for diaspora affairs and the fight against appointed anti-Semitism . In this capacity he sharply criticized the renewed plans for the beatification of Pope Pius XII. In the 2009 elections to the Knesset , Herzog took second place in the list after party chairman Barak and was thus again a member of the parliament.

In the 32nd government of the country under Benjamin Netanyahu , of which the Labor Party was a coalition partner, Herzog again took over the post of Minister of Social Affairs. Despite his ministerial work, he criticized the government's policies several times and finally announced his resignation on January 17, 2011 after Ehud Barak's break with the Labor Party. In November 2013 he was elected party chairman. He became the leader of the opposition to the Netanyahu government in the Knesset and stood in the early elections in March 2015 as the top candidate for the joint electoral list of the Zionist Union , which Avoda formed together with Tzipi Livni's Ha-Tnu'a party .

On June 2, 2021 Duke was in the presidential election by the Knesset in a secret ballot by 87 votes for new president elected. That is the highest majority that has ever been in a presidential election in the Knesset. He prevailed against the competitor, Israel Prize winner Miriam Peretz , who received 26 of the 120 votes. He was sworn in in the Knesset on July 7, 2021 and replaced his predecessor Reuven Rivlin when he took office on July 9, 2021 .
