The Weimarschmieden Jewish Cemetery in Weimarschmieden , a district of the Lower Franconian town of Fladungen in the Rhön-Grabfeld district , covers an area of 9.5 acres .

This is the northernmost Jewish cemetery in Franconia . It is located east of Weimarschmieden, near the border with Thuringia , and contains 80 gravestones ( Mazewot ). It is also possible that some gravestones have sunk into the ground due to their own weight and have thus been lost.

history

The cemetery was built around 1800. At the time (1816) 85 of the 236 inhabitants of Weimarschmieden were Jewish . This number decreased to eight residents in 1910 due to rural exodus.

A year earlier, in 1909, the last burial took place in the Jewish cemetery in Weimarschmieden.
