Jewish cemetery (Untermerzbach)
The Jewish cemetery of the Lower Franconian town of Untermerzbach , seat of the municipality of the same name in the Haßberge district , is half a kilometer west of the town. Another Jewish cemetery in the community is the Jewish cemetery in Memmelsdorf .
On an area of 15 ares there are 52 tombstones ( mazewot ), which are spread over the southern part of the cemetery. This small number compared to the Jewish population in Untermerzbach suggests that some gravestones were pressed into the ground by their own weight or were stolen, destroyed or overgrown by plants over time.
history
Until 1840 the deceased Jews from Untermerzbach were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Ebern . In 1841 the Untermerzbacher Friedhof was built. The first burial was that of 34-year-old Caroline Bettmann, who died in childbed on November 1, 1841. Mali Blumenthal was the last to die here on January 9, 1940.
The Jewish cemetery of Untermerzbach is part of a project funded by the State of Bavaria to document Jewish cemeteries in Bavaria in order to preserve these monuments and sites of German-Jewish history , which were largely destroyed during the time of National Socialism .
