history
The construction of the cemetery dates back to 1453. The oldest identifiable gravestone ( Mazewa ) of the cemetery is from 1596. The cemetery became an association cemetery for the Jewish communities of Aidhausen , Haßfurt , Gnetzgau , Schonungen , Schweinshaupten and Westheim . Many rabbis are among the deceased buried in the cemetery .
The cemetery was first desecrated in 1894.
In September 1925, a war memorial was erected in the cemetery for the Jewish soldiers who died in the First World War . At the inauguration, the town's second mayor spoke out in favor of peaceful coexistence between Jews and Christians. With the funeral of Daniel Mahler on January 18, 1942, the last burial took place in the Jewish cemetery of Kleinsteinach.
